I'm expecting Allison to at least be visibly disgusted. If not outright Poltergrift posted:(Also, just realized why Hastet-Om is constantly calling for more wives -- he's still conscious in there, and it's likely that all he knows is that he's someplace cold and horrible, so he's calling on a dimly-remembered bit of folklore about a wife's love keeping you warm after you die and constantly demanding wives to try to find some kind of warmth in the screaming vegetable hell of his own afterlife.) Thanks for making it so much worse in my mind.

JT Jag posted:I'm guessing Hastet-Om basically cursed Mottom in the process of dying, and she now depends on his fruits in order to (best case scenario) keep up appearances and maintain her empire, being immortal but ancient otherwise or (worst case scenario) she is constantly rapidly aging and depends on the fruit to live, and she probably was closer to a 'normal' ageless immortal before she actually had a Key. I think it just plays into her earlier self-hatred. "I must glimmer eternally", so that the underlings and the carrion who rule her vast empire for her know who's in charge and dont get ideas. That, or maybe her husband taking concubines every time she got a grey hair really hosed her up egotistically. Or both.

Thinking about it, I guess Mottom is going to age again and she'll withdraw the offer to give it all up to Allison.

No, I just think in seeing Mottom's misery and self-hatred, Allison has had an moment of revelation and the sparks of the key is her resolve hardening as to what comes next. She is affecting it.

Glad to see our hero doesn't have the sun shining out of her backside, although I suspect Allison's selling tough love to try to get Cio out of that pit of self-loathing and misery. If nothing else, Cio's current state might be striking our rising king uncomfortably close to home.

I got the same vibe from him but it would be frankly refreshing if Zaid and Allison's friendship leads them to real romance and not using each other for the status symbol of "Woo, we had sex!" We have far too many stories that act like the road ends at a fork of either friendship or romance.

I cannot help but like Cio's philosophy while vehemently disagreeing with the overall take on it. We do change by growing layers over ourselves. By becoming more complex and molding ourselves to something either comfortable to ourselves or acceptable by others around us. Sometimes layers are added by other people, sometimes by introspection. Sometimes they need to be cut down when they risk strangling the person at the heart of them and sometimes the layers are removed by the shock of change. But the act of growing the layers is the change she says doesn't exist. This little aside of her's is far too much fuel for my inner teenage philosopher. Avshalom posted:also this sounds weird but i was genuinely surprised this comic was made by a dude because the female characters are fantastically written Abaddon seems (at least to me) to get that gender is part of a character's identity, both internal and external. How they internalize it and how the world reacts to it should depend upon the setting while being molded by it and themselves. A contemporary setting should carry familiar baggage, but a world where cosmic lottery can give your daughter the power to set fire to someone's hair with a whim is a strange world to also thumbtack our familiar bullshit onto. Good writers act on this, bad ones don't. Which is strange to me considering how fun it is to spend lazy hours thinking and building a universe.
