Even then, I would believe that car crashes are safer than plane crashes, just because I'm pretty sure a single plane crash is gonna cause a lot more casualties than a single car crash.

That's true. But car crashes are wildly more frequent than plane crashes. An individual car crash is less likely to be fatal, and the death count in a fatal car crash is naturally going to be much lower, but there are so so many orders of magnitude more car crashes than aviation crashes that, on aggregate, death by car crash is much, much more likely than death by plane crash.

Like, the grand total number of aviation "incidents" (crashes where the plane was removed from service) in the entire world in all of 2015 was 121. Fatality total: 898.

Compare this to the number of fatalities in car crashes just in Illinois in 2015: 998.

Okay so the joke is that people would post pictures and occasionally someone would claim to be someone in one of the pictures, "I'm the dude on the left" or "I'm the guy poopin' hisself" or whatever, usually as a slightly more interesting way of saying "That guy on the left has a funny expression on his face" or "someone is making GBS threads themselves in that picture." You know, pointing out funny stuff that other people might have missed, by way of claiming to have been there. It kind of fit with the whole 'goon anonymity' thing.

Eventually this evolved into people claiming to be funny things in the picture, or funny abstract observations about the picture. This is how it's stayed since. A lot of people don't get it, and a lot of people assume it's some dumb abstract fuckin' Fight Club reference or something. Which it probably is at this point due to those people, but it didn't start that way.

As for how it happened, well, there's a few things that 95 and 98 did very, very poorly. A lot of people don't want to deal with that headache so they made their programs not run on those versions. And because coders are efficient, why make two checks when you can do it in one?
