Aesop Poprock posted:You could just post pretty much all the GI Joe vehicles and playsets. I had a ton of the action figures but none of the awesome bigger toys to go with them, and one of my mom's rich friends son had all of them and would never let me play with them. That was some bullshit Yea, though I managed to get some of the bigger stuff like The Cobra Mamba http://i.imgur.com/ByCg2wX.jpg Sadly, the chopper blades broke so i Just pretended it was some kind of jet The Cobra Hammerhead http://i.imgur.com/7aRkVrb.jpg Not nearly as cool as the Bug, but still big an impressive, and yes it did float! And the Thunder Clap http://i.imgur.com/FmXB7vk.jpg The best thing is it had an eject mechanism that was exactly like a bolt action rifle on it. There were lots I never got, like the Terrordrome and the big mobile base and shuttle sets. I had tons of the figures though. I think there was a point where i had every single one from every year. The figures where really cheap like 2bux so it was easy to get my mom to buy me one every time we went to the mall, and of course grandparents would shower me with what ever ones i wanted. The funny thing, the very first GI Joe I owned was the origonal Snake Eyes, which is worth a ton these days. I was nuts for any 3.5" figure, because they would fit inside each other vehicles, So the Joe's could hang out on the Falcon and stuff. One that was short lived but super cool was StarCom. The figures all had magnets on their boots so they could cling to parts of the vehicles and the vehicles had wind up actions so you could do something like wind up a ground vehicle put it in the bay on the ship, and the ship when it opened the bay, it would shoot out. http://i.imgur.com/g8tD6Oa.jpg I had so many MUSCLEs because again, they were cheap and you could get a lot of them for not much. I think there was a set that was like $10 that come with 20 or something. I always wondered what their origins where, like did a company buy up a bunch of random Japanese figures and sell them all together? These days they make me think of something you'd win in a gatchabon machine. They were all so random they had to be from multiple sources.

bulletsponge13 posted:I grew up kinda poor, and when a local big toy store went out of business, my Mom got me every Starcom thing and gave it to me on Christmas. I think they only ever had one series, unlike Transformers or Gi Joe, so there was one release, and that was it. According to Wikipedia, the TV show was cancled after a season and even though the toys sold well its first year, they were discontinued after 2. They were popular in Asia and Europe, and were rereleased with the US markings removed and the characters localized. Another toy that was super cool but short lived was Air Raiders. Had a real Dune feeling to it Look at this, it might as well be the Harkonnen's the Fremen fighting http://i.imgur.com/yObkOKK.jpg The plot was some planet where air was rationed or some crap. The cool feature of the toys was they had air launched missiles. I had this one http://i.imgur.com/yFr6QDV.jpg When you squeezed the disk at the back, the missiles would shoot out. They were made of soft rubber so they couldn't hurt, but they'd fly pretty far. The interesting thing the figures were pretty small and simple,. so they could make insane pieces like this http://i.imgur.com/d8P3Bwl.jpg Weird, there is no wikipedia article about it. Another gimmick toy was Visionaries, Knights of the magical light! http://i.imgur.com/cP68IgD.jpg They had vague Arthurian feel to them, but their gimmick was the holograms on their banners and cuirass. Another thing is they were big, bigger than most other figures. At least 2.5 times taller than a Gi joe. Man I just love action figures, I always have and always will. I have an embarassingly large amount of them bought in the last 20 years. Most are Star Wars, I have some LOTR ones, some more modern like a Marvel Legends Captain Marvel and Tali from Mass Effect, but nothing will beat a good old classic 3.5 incher. Speaking of those, I wish I had more of the Secret Wars figures I had as a kid. http://i.imgur.com/WWDUZ25.jpg I had Magneto, Black Suit Spiderman, Cap, Wolverine and iron Man, I still have my Magneto, but he was all chewed up by the lawn mower some 80s summer day. Oh I almost forgot, remember how there were Gi Joes based on real people? Like Sergeant Slaughter? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9QN1MP-QFcg Best thing he he voiced himself in the show. There was also The Fridge, who's weapon was a mace made out of a football. I don't know about that one According to Wikipedia, Larry Hama was the basis for Tunnel Rat (he created the 80s Gi joe out of ideas he had for a new SHIELD comic), and some weird ones like Stephen Kings son was made into a character. Whoa, there was a Roddy Piper Gi Joe? Why am I just hearing about this 30 years too late?

God drat the caps that came as a strip were bullshit, and it was so much better when they came in the rings. Though you could get more shots out of the strips. As for religious groups coming out against toys, this is probably the best thing to see just how that thinking works https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hnjdq32u-MU Basically, because it has "occult" overtone, meanings magic, monsters, and other stuff kids like and have fun with, therefor its about SATAN and a recruiting tool. The best part is the guy who looks more like an 80s porn star than a evangelical is using the Snake Mountain speaker and looks like he's having fun with it.

Yea, nightwing was probably one of the coolest GI Joe things. I loved how its cockpit dropped down. Cobra always had the best stuff. lidnsya posted:I just remembered Capsela! This reminds me of Meccano. http://i.imgur.com/GOZnCDu.jpg Just various metal pieces with screws and washers. But you could build neat stuff. My dad had it when he was a kid in the 50s, his sets were more impressive http://i.imgur.com/qz5vyRd.jpg The crazy thing is he still had stuff he made when he was 10.

1000 Brown M and Ms posted:Meccano was/is a pretty popular toy in the UK and other Commonwealth countries (not sure about the US). It's kind of like Lego in that the basic way it works hasn't changed since it was invented so you can use stuff from the 50s or whenever with the stuff from today no problem. Yea, when I googled for the images most UK places showed up. The main difference between the ones I had and the ones my dad had was that the modern parts are stainless steel and aluminum and my dads seem to be green and red painted iron. Probably painted with lead paint or something else horrible from the past.

I had one of these that came with The leafs and the Canadians. My Cousin had one that was the leafs vs the Canucks, and I knew another kid who had one with the Canadians and the Oilers. I am pretty sure they were sold with specific teams on them at that point, so when you bought it you'd find the teams you wanted. Either that or they were random, and packaged regionally. They were way better than the electric football game my oldest cousin had though. Stupid thing just vibrated until everyone fell over. Not really related to toys so to speak, but I remember in the late 80s and early 90s, kids were rewarded with Pizza for everything. There were always coupons in books and comics and games and figures and on tv for Pizza. I really think the popularity of Ninja Turtles was to blame for this.

http://i.imgur.com/nZIutMp.jpg This was the first big lego thing I had. I probably have most of the pieces still. Later castles had the walls molded as one piece, but not this bad boy, tons of the 2 nub bricks everywhere.

The gloves on the Sectaurs were surprisingly well made. They held up to a lot of abuse me and my cousins put them through. There is a toy I remember that was a robot toy, but it was not transformers nor gobots. I wish I could remember what they were called. The leader of the good guys had some name like Max or something.

Yea I have no idea what happened to mine. I did shoot the gun from the big tanker at my sister by accident and my dad took the missiles from it. This has most of the songs in it so they can get stuck in your head for the rest of the day https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dy3RTFFhSYs It's missing Inhumanoids though https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ls2lvNYrZVI I always liked this toy, because its basically "How can we make HP Lovecraft for kids?"

davidspackage posted:Were those the figures with magnet feet? A friend of mine had those and I was really jealous. Wasn't that StarCom? I don't remember if they had a cartoon show, but man those were super duper cool. I remember having a shuttle that had a loading bay in it that you could rev up a buggy, put it inside and when the bay opened, the buggy would shoot out. Frankston posted:My mother let me and my bro watch gruesome 80's adult movies growing up so we were all over stuff like RoboCop, Aliens, Terminator, that kinda thing. Back then these R-rated movies had toy lines for children for some inexplicable reason. Anyway, I got this for like my 6th birthday I think: I didn't seem weird at the time, but when I became an adult I found it super weird that R rated action movies always got action figures. My parents let me watch Aliens and Predator, but Robocop was no way.
