I am the sexiest poster in the world!
Yeah I'm all for it. I liked G Gundam overall and it's an interesting take on Gundam that's certainly different than anything else out there. There's plenty of room for that in a series that's mostly about war drama.

Like many others my first proper exposure to Gundam was Gundam Wing on Toonami, so I can't blame you or anyone for not really getting snagged by G Gundam as a follow up to that. There's plenty of nostalgia tinted glasses at work here, but I feel like most Gundam fans would be very on board with a follow up movie in the Wing universe with fancier modern animation to it, somewhat similar to the recent SEED movie.

Recommendations for the Wing and G dubs should always be taken with a handful of nostalgia, even if the people pushing them on you refuse to acknowledge that. I'm not unbiased enough to really pick out issues with G's, though I've watched it more times subbed at this point.

I was not into fighting anime. Wing was 7th grade for me, so I love giant robots, mecha, outlaw star you know. but fighting stuff did nothing for me. It wasn't until Kai that I gave DBZ even half a chance. And given how similar the designs are, and everything else, so G Gundam scratched no itches for me.

The Dub is not bad but it's not good enough for me to like it over the japanese dub, unlike FLCL or Cowboy Bebop. That said I love the Wing dub because it's so bizarre and also that's how I watched it in the first place. So during the 09 attempt I was trying the dub even though everything else I was watching at the time was original voices.

So continuing on to Zeta Gundam and I'm just not getting drawn into it immediately like I did with the original Gundam. I remember really liking it and I'm sure it will get there eventually but I think the main problem is just the translation in both subtitles and dub feels confusing. Are there any other translations of it or something? the version I'm watching on crunchyroll also doesn't seem to have the original music. I might dig through the ol HDDs and try to find the old maybe fan-subbed versions I first watched. The actual art in the animation is fantastic though.

ah ha! the translation really is different! example from episode 5:

The intro music is the same however.

The dub makes at least one choice late in that is so much better that I have to recommend it. But it's not for a ways yet, so I can understand reluctance if you're not going in for dubs much already.

I don't object to a good dub! I actually watched all of the first Gundam this time around in dub, it was pretty decent. Also watching Dungeon Meshi in dub.

The intro and ending music for Zeta ended up in rights hell so no licensed North American release includes it so far.

I love the Zeta dub, though partly for nostalgia reasons. As mentioned in an earlier post on this page, it's the B-team, but I think they did a great job. Kamille especially captures the energy of an angry teen getting his poo poo together perfectly.

Also yeah, in general I think dub scripts end up being way more natural-sounding, since actors have to actually say them out loud. You end up with a lot fewer of those awkward sentences that sound stilted or overly formal (or just nonsensical).

I loved the dub cast for the new roles, especially the very Canadian Titan grunts. Just a shame they recast the returning characters, Michael Kopsa was perfect.

I suppose I should just be grateful that they were all around for CCA.

I liked Zeta's dub, too, in particular the aforementioned Kamille VA and also Four's VA.

As for Wing's dub...it's definitely got charm. I've never heard a dub quite like this in my life

I've never heard dialogue quite like this in my life either so maybe that explains the very odd voice direction in it where everyone seems to be directed to "always sound very solemn." Maybe they were going for some sort of extreme gravitas? "This is Serious and Dramatic!" I dunno. I love it, I do know that.

Was Wing dubbed over before G Gundam? I feel like Ocean/Blue Water got better over time with their Gundam voiceovers. I'm quite fond of the 0079 and CCA dubs but I also think that 00 is prooooobably the best one they've done in terms of overall quality?

People say bigger is better.

But for the first time in my life, I think I've gone too far.
Yes, Wing was dubbed first, in 2000. G Gundam didn't get dubbed until 2002, with Zeta getting dubbed in 2004.

The dub order was all over the place.

it makes perfect sense if you think a bit. wing gets dubbed first because it's the most recent AU that doesn't lean on meta-franchise references like X/Turn A do, so it's a nice clean contextless intro to gundam for american kids. Then G gets dubbed because it's the one before that, then Zeta because it's clearly caught on to some degree and you can give them the more for-gundam-fans stuff. You also missed the 2001 dub of MSG, indicating they pulled away from doing UC for a few years after airing a 70s show in 2001 didn't go over that well.

I really wish I liked G Gundam more than I did but yeah the fights leave a lot to be desired

as much as I kid about not liking it, I didn't have any interest in witch from mercury because I wasn't interested in the setting*, the character designs looked really dumb, and the protagonist looks like she has brain damage. Also, any time I saw a clip or something pop up on YT the descriptions were always like "(CHARACTER) SLAP A BULLY ON THA BUTT 😱😱😱🤣🤣🤣😱😱😝😝😝"

The LGBT representation is nice and I'm glad people are enjoying it because Gundam is cool but, man, it just seemed like it's the kind of anime that is not made for me

*not that every Gundam needs to be some serious rear end war drama but it just didn't appeal to me

"Let's be positive! Let's start a fire!"

To be fair to Amuro, a lot of his arguments are various permutations of "Char why the gently caress are we here"

Amuro's final words essentially being "what the gently caress are you talking about" was great, I loved that movie

I said it before but I was confused as gently caress when I saw it on adult swim years ago, so after finally watching Zeta and reading a synopsis for ZZ in the past year or so there were so many things that actually made sense lol

Amuro's repeated lines about "Char!! We've fought alongside each other after all this time etc etc" when you've only seen 0079 was just

My appreciation for CCA and Char/Amuro's rivalry is how much Amuro is very much not interested. This is a job for him. For Char this is the greatest showdown with his destined rival and he's obsessed with crafting the perfect finale (that of course ends with Char winning and he actually doesn't care how clean that victory is because he's full of double standards and always has been) but Amuro's just like "God loving drat it gotta stop the god damned Axis drop Char you stupid fuckwit." My absolute favourite part is when they get out of the Mobile Suits in Axis, and Amuro gets on the radio and gives his call out to Char Aznabel being a bitch rear end motherfucker.

I also like when Amuro remembers he has a gun.

Just "I wanted this guy to stop bothering me so much I forgot I could just shoot him. That's so much better!"

Sadly, Quess had to ruin everything. (A running theme with Quess.)
