So far as I can tell Hillary is the only candidate that even has an official Spanish-language poster. And no candidates at all from what I can tell have any Spanish-language merchandise, which seems like a pretty glaring market inefficiency.

Hillary's website also has a direct link to the Spanish version at the top ("En Español"), as does Bush's ("ES"). Ben Carson's also has a link at the top (under "More," "En Español"). Bernie's has one at the bottom of his main page ("En Español").

Bush's Spanish site is a poor joke. If you click on any link it immediately takes you to the English-language version of that page, and you have to click "ES" all over again. Plus huge parts remain in English. So, if you click on "Noticias," and then "Blog," you're taken to the English "Blog" page, and if you once again hit "ES," "Blog" changes to "Noticias" and roughly 10% of the articles appear in Spanish. Bush's Spanish-language website even still says "Shop" instead of "Tienda."

Carson's site has only some stuff in Spanish - you can learn about him, his stand on the issues, volunteer, and contribute, but it lacks his "Ben on the Road" and "Events" pages. It also lacks a link to his store, which seems like poor planning - at least Bush, Hillary, and Bernie understand that even Spanish-speakers can spend money.

Hillary's and Bernie's sites, by contrast, are fully-fledged Spanish-language sites. All the stories, information, etc. as well as the links, fields, forms, etc. are in Spanish. Their stores are the only exception.

Rubio's site has no Spanish version at all, which seems really idiotic. Googling did reveal a page with Spanish stories on his site but I can't figure out how to get to that list of stories from his own website (and the site itself remains in English). Incidentally, Marco Rubio's main page has links at the bottom (Jobs, Disclaimers, Contacts, etc.) and a newsfeed that automatically loads more stories. Dumbass.

Sometimes I get mad about how Spanish is spoken so much in modern America, but then I remember that a lot of the states used to be Mexico or Spain before it got stolen from them so that's probably a bit rich.

even in 2012 there were almost nine white voters for every hispanic voter1, so despite the entire conversation being about minorities voting more, if white people suddenly start voting 75% republican it just won't matter what the browns want for another decade or three. it's really the white vote that decides it, since that's the biggest group, but with the minority groups growing and being almost monolithically democrat and with a large minority of white people apparently refusing to be republicans (it's us) the conversation tends to head toward the minority groups

the conservative election analysts like to talk about the 'missing whites' (i guess they dont even know how creepy they sound all the time) who didn't show up to vote in these elections they lost2. i could craft a Winning Argument and write a five-paragraph essay saying why he's wrong but im willing to wait until 2016 to see if they find those whites under the fridge or something and push the trend lines back for a while longer.

probably the reason they didn't show up of course is that their candidates were poo poo, and i don't quite see how that's going to change in 2016, but whatever i'm not gonna read this dude's article again i already did once like two years ago

We hit that mark already, but the conversation is especially visible this general cycle because Republican rhetoric re: specifically latino immigrants has basically guaranteed that this is a race to see which democrat sits in the Oval till 2020 which upsets some Very Important People who would at least like a credible shot at putting a creationist in the White House.

He's attended at least one high-profile Latino-centric conference and has a fairly strong outreach contingent in his staff. Maybe he's doing outreach in this group in a more low-key way.

In other news, one side effect of the GOP whining about NBC's alleged bias is that now there won't be any Republican debates on Spanish language networks.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/blog...omepage%2Fstory

Democrats are considering scheduling an additional candidate forum on Telemundo, while ¡Jeb! is the only Republican who's fighting against the cancellation of the NBC/Telemundo debate.

2 http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2013/06/21/the_case_of_the_missing_white_voters_revisited_118893.html

Back in the 60's, GOP strategists developed a plan to take advantage of the breakup of the New Deal Coalition. The NDC was breaking up because Democrats insisted on developing the non-white vote in the North, in the post-WW2 great migration, and because Democrats assumed that the South would never bolt for the party of Lincoln and carpetbaggers. The GOP saw that they could win elections by appealing to racists in the South by adopting "states rights" and anti-integration positions, racists in the north with anti "forced bussing" positions and other racial dogwhistles, and anti-Communist types all over the country with Libertarian language and by conflating everything on the left with Communism. They saw future electoral success in appealing to Southern white racists, and Northern and Midwestern Suburbanites (who were equally racist). They were able to roll various religious white folk into this alliance as well. The best articulation of this plan is Kevin Phillips' The Emerging Republican Majority, published in 1969 and dedicated to Richard Nixon.

Well, you could fashion a national party with great success using an All-White electorate for a long time. In 1980, non-whites were only 12% of the total electorate. Ronald Reagan won 56% of the White vote and won the election in a landslide. In 2012, the non-white vote was 28% of the electorate and went 80% to Obama. Romney won 59% of white voters and got crushed in the election. The GOP absolutely can't win with a Whites Only strategy, because Whites are marginally less important, and there's only so many Whites today that will buy the GOP line. You aren't going to see the GOP break into 60%+ Whites with their current platform.

TLDR: The GOP figured out a long time ago that White people really loving hate blacks and other browns, and they fashioned a winning national party on that hatred. That strategy is becoming less and less effective over time as demographics change, even marginally.
