At least you have some hills and poo poo in the panhandle where you live, and you're close to some bitchin' roads.

I love where I live in St.Pete though, love downtown and going to Rays games ten minutes away, love the beach and love the weather. It's a peninsula within a peninsula, so we're basically isolated from the rest of the state......Sometimes I wish I could blow up all the bridges to keep the rest of the Floridians out.

Hey, Hillsborough isn't that ba- ok, I can't say that with a straight face. You'd still have to build a wall to block out the channel of pure insanity that is 19.

$9,000. It's an '03 with 90k miles, Custom Luxury package which is just below the Ultimate Luxury package. It's pretty drat close to perfect and I think we got a hell of a lot of car for 9k.

I'll break out the good camera and take more pics tomorrow.

Suddenly, there was a terrible roar all around us, and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, and a voice was screaming: Holy Jesus. What are these goddamn animals?

No point in mentioning these bats, I thought. Poor bastard will see them soon enough.

Almost there. Installed all new belts and hoses. New CAS O-ring which was leaking all over the heater hose as well.

Found this hanging off the the coil harness and assumed it was a ground. After posting in the Miata thread Phone thought it was the temp gauge lead and he was right. I knew he was right because I grounded it and when i ran the car the gauge was pegged :v:

Got the Miata back up to replace the temp sender and crank position sensor.

Had to drain the coolant to replace the temp sender, looks good so far, I may check in a month or two to see if the stop leak is still spreading.

Impromptu tool table since I was too lazy to drag out the cart :v:

Old vs new temp sender....Holy poo poo the macro is good on this little Canon, any palm readers in the house?

Gave it a much needed wash, probably hasn't been washed in over a year.

So I went to replace the crank sensor hoping it would solve the misfire, but not really expecting it to and it didn't. Apparently the crank sensor code is just there to tell you there's a misfire....No loving poo poo. Now it's back to the drawing board to figure out the number of things that could be the culprit and I'm really not in the mood and thinking about just dropping it off at the Miata specialist around the corner. I'm going to take a closer look at the coils, plugs and wires but if there's nothing obvious gently caress it I'm over it :argh:

Throw on some nice headers, keep on top of your oil changes, and do the stress about a future starter replacement. It's only under the intake manifold. If you've seen how tight it is at the side of these motors, you'd be thanking them for putting it there!

Applebees Appetizer
Jan 23, 2006

The Lexus is my wife's so I doubt she's going to want headers. Besides after a quick search $1k is pretty steep, not including an exhaust to go behind them. Probably going to keep this one stock for sure. If you have any other tips for the motor though I'm all ears.

In other news, I sold the Protege for $1600 to the first guy that looked at it and he didn't even try to negotiate on the price. Not a bad profit even after the time spent and parts bought, I'll take it.

The Miata has been running great and after not driving it for almost a year it's been so nice to drive it and not have to worry about driving it hard and the water pump exploding, and my son is ecstatic that it's back in the fold so it looks like I'll be keeping it for now.

I decided to go ahead and install the Momo wheel that's been sitting in my room for over a year, I got a Momo hub as well to go with it cheap even though I knew I had to drill a hole in it to accommodate the clock spring wires. It's a known PITA but I said screw it for the sake of being a cheapskate.

I had to whittle down the pigtail coming out of the clock spring as much as possible to fit the hole I drilled in the hub. This pigtail normally has three wires, two for the airbag and one for the horn, but since I don't ever plan on putting the stock wheel back in i said gently caress it and cut it down to just the horn wire.

Drilled a hole, then used a dremel to elongate the hole a bit so the pigtail can fit through.

Installed, feels incredible, but now the horn doesn't work wtf :(

I think my favourite detail on the LS400 when it comes to obsessive design is that the rear control arms have special channels to guide the underbody air so it doesn't create a faint buffeting noise that's only audible at very high speeds with the stereo off.

Thanks man. It really does feel like a new car, when I think about some of the other cars we were considering in the same price range and mileage (thank god we didn't get a Hyundai Santa Fe) nothing was even sniffing these cars. It was a no brainer. We were looking at GS's too but there weren't near as many for sale and they had a tendency to be ragged out. The LS is one of those cars that is almost always well taken care of, and this one was no exception, it has a full maintenance history through local Lexus dealers and I can pull it up any time I want through Lexusdrivers.com.

Also the 430's have a timing belt, believe it or not, and it actually looks like a relatively easy job.

Just praying the starter never goes :v:

Damnit, typo. I was looking at GM shitboxes with the 3.6 VVT motor that eats timing chains and had chains on the mind.

The LS 400/430 has a timing belt, yep. It's not hard, but when I did it, I didn't have the cams locked in any way. One of them moved a bit during the belt change. Before I pulled the pin on the tensioner, I wanted to double-check and rotated the motor. Mistake. Don't do that. :D

The starter will never go. Drive without fear. And drive it hard, because nobody ever does, but those cars loving LOVE it.

Since Leica apparently sold his precious little gem, this thread has not enough Mazda BG in it. Therefore, some pics from the latest bout with our racecar-to-be:

Here is where I realize the BP engine has some kind of VICS thing going on, the white-striped vacuum line going from the solenoid in the bottom of the picture to the actuator in the middle. That black canister is also a vacuum reservoir (between manifold and solenoid). I'm guessing that is because when it's supposed to be activated ("Vics just kicked in yo") around 5000rpm, you might be at WOT and not have enough vacuum to run the actuator. Will need additional fuckery to install a different ECU (aiming for a Speeduino), but I'll manage.

Hanging the engine from a too-bah-fore while we remove the subframe, attaching the 2x4 to the car with self-drilling screws and steel bands:

Having removed the subframe, we can then get to the anti-roll-bar and boogerweld some more steel to it hoping to make it stiffer:

While doing this my good stick welder broke (it blew a resistor that is easy enough to replace but I didn't have on hand), had to finish it up with an exceedingly cheap and crappy welder that I bought in a pinch once. Hate using it, but it sort of just about works.

Not shown in picture: Installed a new driver-side-door window (it was busted), and found out that both rear springs had the top ~3/4 turns rusted through and broken off. No biggie, it's getting lowered 1-1.5 turns anyway, just need to shave the ends off a bit to make them sit better in the top mount. Both top mounts and strut towers were in excellent condition though. They usually rust to poo poo by gathering generous amounts of Swedish Winter Substance, a special mix of snow, sand and salt that is pretty efficient at destroying car matter. The strut towers are pretty tall, and stuff that is flung off the tires just gathers way up there to do its thing.
All four brake calipers are off the car for a makeover (make slide pins slide again, check state of gaskets and bleed screws, and verify that we indeed need new brake hoses).

We also have a new pressure plate, but no clutch disc yet and the clutch release bearing was the wrong bloody kind.

I kinda wanted to keep the Protege, but it just made more sense to keep the Camry instead. It's a way more convenient and comfortable DD. Plus it has a killer sound system I put in that I didn't want to give up.

Bought this manual rack for the Miata the other day I think I'm becoming a parts hoarder :(

Got the rack and pulley for 100 bucks, since I'm getting rid of the a/c I can sell the pulley and make most of that money back.
