Have you considered an RV? I mean I wouldn't read an RV thread but have you?

This thread delivers, we have finally reached the point where the OP is starting to be combative. As far as insulation, the best cheap method I have seen is cutting Styrofoam smaller then the space between the joists and using the cans of spray foam to outline it to do a ghetto spray foam insulation job on the cheap. The advantage is I think this stuff makes a glorious flame if you can get it to ignite.

Can we group buy some life insurance on the OP since we all now have an insurable interest in this thread continuing? Seems like a good investment.

Holy crap dogs are expensive. Send it to the pound. Then you won't have to move into a boat.

Has anyone recommend that the OP just try to squat possess a house? Surely there are tons of empty homes in the winter as older people flee the wind chill for Florida. Eventually one will die in Florida and no one will notice and the house is all his!

Why doesn't he just get a SBA loan and become a commercial fisherman? That way all the expenses are deductible against his fish sales.

They can't just keep his deposit without demonstrating damage to the apartment.

Not that there won't be an attempt, but OP should probably document the condition of the apartment before moving out.

Well all they have to do is send a list of damages for him to dispute to his know address, which will be some boat dock without mail service so they can keep his deposit when he doesn't respond.

Did I miss how the dog is supposed to do its business when you're on a frozen lake?

Why can't it poop and pee on the ice? Get it some spiky paw boots. I think pooping on the liquid lake would be harder. Maybe a plank?

Have you read the house buying thread? Buying a house will not make your savings go up, it will make it go below zero. I would stick with the house boat.

Yeah just build a floating house. Buy a shipping container and attach some steel barrel to one side of it.

Hmm, last I checked prosper was the princely sum of 5%? That is lower then any boat loan. They charge you extra for the loan to be secured by a boat because of the disposal costs.

Prosper will loan you (If you have similar income and credit score as me) 35k at 5.99%. There are at least 3 other peer to peer sites that will do the same. That is 100k for your boat home trailer park investment. Do it. Why do you not want to become the Donald Trump of house boats? You can import a wife from Canada.

Quality thread. I lived in Minneapolis most of my life, and there's no way you'd get me to winter on a houseboat there.

I've had the same fantasy for a while now, living on a houseboat. I live in DC now, but it doesn't seem feasible here due to lack of slippage in the District itself. The only place is down by Southwest Waterfront, and due to huge construction in the area they aren't taking any new boats for the foreseeable future. That leaves Baltimore. I travel up there on weekends sometimes to engage in some houseboat porn. I can afford to pay cash for a boat up there, but the headaches involved make me balk. Maintenance seems like a nightmare. No one should go into houseboat living without doing some serious research. Anyone lacking mechanical aptitude should also take a community college course in small-engine repair too, before making the jump.

Look at this dream crusher.

Hey OP, it's working for people in Toronto, and it's at least as cold here as it is there.

Reading this does not make me want to live on a boat. Pumping sewage in sub zero temps was the nope moment for me.
