The early internet was a very weird place, and early memes were one of the weirdest parts of it. In spite of (or probably because of) how painfully unfunny most of them are, I'm still completely fascinated with them. So let's post 'em! I'll start with the obvious ones: https://web.archive.org/web/19991123001948/http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Bluffs/4157/hampdance.html https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5x5OXfe9KY

I remember on napster when you could download a parody song of pretty much any song that ever came out, why were there so many out there? Why don't they make them anymore? I spent hours downloading them, although I doubt that I would like them today.

Nuebot posted:They were always listed as being by Weird Al, too. Even if it obviously wasn't him. That wasn't just comedy songs either. A ridiculously large proportion of all songs on Napster or KaZaA were misattributed. Presumably whoever first shared them must have known who they were by, but I guess somewhere along the way that information got removed from the file and then later someone else just guessed who it was and uploaded it?

Several of my friends believed for a long time that Aerosmith's song "Dream on" was written and performed by Led Zeppelin, because that's what it usually said when they downloaded the mp3.

Yes, it is an old Fark meme, but I often recall this when considering replying to some people and I discard my post. I think I am a better person for it

I don't know if it counts as old Internet since I think it's still around and maybe active, but I spent way more time on YTMND in 05-06 than any sane or reasonable person should. It was like YouTube for its own insular circle of memes before YouTube had the technology to really take off. Also, within a month or two of no longer visiting that site I got laid for the first time, and I don't think that's a coincidence.

Ramos posted:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8fvTxv46ano I think I was 12 or so when I first watched this video (where would this even have been hosted? I can't remember), and I remember being really fascinated as a Euro kid by what I perceived as "American culture". It's hard to describe, but especially the pictures of TImes Square and the street sign in the middle of nowhere (thumbnail above) somehow made a strong impression on me. I also only realised at the second viewing or so that those pictures had been photoshopped. I really was somewhat naive back then

Also, within a month or two of no longer visiting that site I got laid for the first time, and I don't think that's a coincidence. By "old," I basically mean pre-YouTube and widespread high-speed internet, so I'd say that counts. Also, I intended "meme" in the broadest sense possible, basically as anything that got spread around a lot via the internet. In fact, if anyone still has any old e-mail forwards or anything like that, that would be cool too. LogisticEarth posted:Also, Maddox and The Best Page in the Universe was all the rage in 1999, and he's apparently still around and making awful YouTube videos: So that's who Maddox is! I'd heard the name a lot, but I had no idea who it was. I'm pretty young, so I missed a lot of this stuff the first time around. Honestly the original video for the song is crazier than any amount of moving Colin Mochrie around. theironjef has a new favorite as of 02:59 on Oct 27, 2015 |

Borat came out several years after that did. I had an annoying friend back in 2001 who knew all the lines by heart and would prove it to you at the drop of a hat.
