If you hated the remote like I did:

https://www.amazon.com/Sideclick-Universal-Attachment-Streaming-Players/dp/B01N3PL81R

This poo poo changed the game in my house. We used to have to have multiple remotes for various things, now we only need one. I got it a year ago or so, still works without changing battery-- not a single complaint.

It also gives the remote a little bit more heft so you don't feel like you're slinging around a baseball card. But most importantly, it attaches to a single side which means when you pick up the ATV remote you never have to flip it around because you picked it up upside down which was ANNOYING.

Me too. I programmed it to change inputs on the receiver, mute, menus, etc. I stored my other remotes away and haven’t looked back.

I did too but I could never get mine to power the TV on, tried fiddling with the auto-wake, etc. And then changing the input on the TV was even more of a nightmare, once I got a PS4, etc.

Volume, etc., works just fine on the ATV but power/input no.

I want to watch movies and view pictures and gifs I have on a hard drive. The HDD is connected to my PC by USB.

What is the best way to watch your own movies AND see pictures on an AppleTV nowadays?

I currently have my PC sharing the HDD over my network via SMB which is accessed via Infuse on my devices-- didn't need Pro. It works but it's pretty jank and you can't see pictures.

I was thinking it would be a good idea to shove all my poo poo into a cloud storage option somehow, but since some of the things on there are homemade porn I'd be violating various TOS rules, even if they go unenforced.

Learned about the SideClick through this thread a while back. Can anyone confirm whether or not it allows you to map the... uh, "side-click" commands from the ATV siri remote? You know, the command that lets you go forward or back by 10 seconds in a video.

I've read that it has to learn ATV commands through IR, requiring some other programmable remote (I've got a Harmony One I could use). However last I checked you couldn't actually assign the side-click function in harmony software, so I may be out of luck here.

I'm confused why would you want to have the sideclick perform an action that the ATV remote that it's attached to is able to do? I think it's just supposed to let you get rid of your TV's remote.

The side-click often feels clumsy on the ATV remote, and for whatever reason it works worse in some apps than others. I've mostly gotten used to it but my wife doesn't have the patience for it.

The iPhone remote app has dedicated buttons for it so I was hoping the function could be programmed. But all signs point to negative!

Really the main function I need is a mute button, so the Sideclick can give me that at least.

Oh, that makes sense. I guess I rarely sideclick to fast forward so haven't experienced the problems here.

what is side click

A Sideclick is a small IR remote that attaches to your ATV remote. A sideclick is when you click on the left/right edge of the touchpad on the ATV remote to rewind or fast forward 15s.

Can you compare the SteamLink app performance to the physical SteamLink? I bought one for like five bucks, but would gladly shelve it if the app is as good or better.

As long as you can sync a Switch pro controller, that is.

The app on ATV isn't noticeably different.

There is a 1-3ms difference in response time (SteamLink better), and it seems to not attempt to re-render on the Big Picture Mode as much.

If you have not yet tried Steam Link, it received an update this week enabling HEVC decoding in the app. The streaming quality is almost flawless over ethernet. I set bandwidth to automatic and its between 40 mb/s and 50 mb/s with less than 30 ms of latency total. I tried some resident evil, hitman and hollow knight and it was excellent.

With the tvOS 13 update, I assume the app will be able to forward your input natively from your xbox controller.

Is that why it was so much smoother? I was able to play Overwatch on my ATV today and I had no problems.

I set it to "balanced" but couldn't notice a difference in input latency vs "beautiful" to be quite honest.

The TV app would be great except that it doesn't let me filter out the poo poo I can't watch right now without having to buy stuff. YouTube doesn’t work with homepods and follows a different UI such that you don’t have the option to switch audio devices. The great list of apps I have that doesn’t work with homepods are:

Even twitch works. Even Channels works.

Pause a show or put your finger on the remote to make the playback bar appear and, if the app supports it (big if), there’ll be a little PIP button.

The only one that has it is Apple TV+ so far (for me). When they said they’re opening it up everywhere they mean all the devs CAN add PiP to theirs.

I want a YouTube (or Twitch) PiP really bad but they’ll probably never come because YouTube is the only app on my ATV that doesn’t give a poo poo about normal tvOS standards and does their own, lovely thing. Homepods don’t work on YouTube! Still! gently caress Google.

My wife and I are in the same iCloud family, can she use her AirPods with our AppleTV seamlessly or is there weirdness because the ATV is set up with my iCloud account?

My use of AirPods works brilliantly by the way, just wish there was a way to access the menu needed with the harmony remote since there isn't a long-press option. Only reason I pull out the ATV remote.

If this works seamlessly, this functionality is really making me long for an ATV stick for my bedroom. Be perfect to be able to watch something with a TV across the room and not wake up the kids.

It has to be. YouTube loving sucks on ATV. I think the fact that videos don’t default to the lowest resolution available was a begrudging concession by Google.
