Do you have any issues with Netflix or Hulu or HBO or the like? I have gotten random errors and buffering in just about every app so far despite my good connection; maybe once or twice a day on average. Could be a lower-level problem. OTOH it hasn't happened to me in SimpleX yet.

I will test that.

You can't download a movie to the AppleTV.

You could take your laptop, download the video to iTunes (or Plex media server) and then use an ad-hoc network between ATV and server to play it.

Has anyone had issues with playback 'freezing' but audio keeps going? Last night I was trying to watch Casino Royale from the iTunes store and 5 times the video would freeze, and audio would continue. Eventually we'd get "An error has occurred loading this content"... and I'm wondering if it is ATV or the stream, or cable. I've not seen that behavior before.

Unless that was you above, someone else I think mentioned that as well in the last day...

That I have not noticed yet.

Man I need to put a sticker on this remote. Half the time in a dim room I have it upside down. The other 25% of the time I graze the scrubber trying to pause/play/resume. The last 25% of the time I long press the home button to sleep it and when clicking on sleep it cycles down to cancel.

What I'm saying is it's loving sensitive for a remote that looks the same no matter how you grab it...

So my ATV(4) is connected via HDMI to my TV. My TV is connected to my (not very amazing but totally competent) Onkyo receiver.

I *think* so far I've only noticed my front channels making sounds. Do I need to set my ATV up with certain settings to get 5.1? Now that I'm asking this I'm doubting myself if I tested it with a movie or just tv shows...

[Ed] this is about the third time in as many weeks now that I have come down to find my ATV4 unresponsive to the Internet despite being connected to wifi. Have to reboot and do a bunch of bullshit and hope it decides to play nice.

Yeah it doesn't make me hate the device or anything. Just sort of go "What the gently caress, did all Apple designers/testers just meticulously pick it up with tongs every time they tested it?!"

I do hope it will give you a warning when it's running low.

It gives you an on screen pop up when it connects, I don't see why that sort of UX wouldn't also be how it told you "Hey, battery is low".

I tell you, either my Network has mysteriously gone to poo poo (randomly) or the ATV4 has some spooky "WTF"levels of FUBAR with it's wifi.

I was streaming The Polar Express all day no problem. Tried to watch a trailer in Apple Trailers an hour later, no dice. Checked Speediest App on ATV4 and I get .36 down.

I test again 5 minutes later... 14 down. All is good again.

It's like that sporadically almost every night. My ATV3 never ONCE had a spot of trouble. (Located in the same spot, no less...)

Two other anecdotes: my wife hates it and reports similar "too sensitive" issues. Another friend got used to it really quick without issues.

I only hold it when I need to interact. It still just sucks for his sensitive/active it is. Drop it and go to pick it up oops you just fast forwarded or paused it. It's just a really clever but really flawed remote. Half the time I touch or grab the thing I do something I wasn't intending...

I can only speak to the free Star Wars level in Disney Infinity but that plays really nicely.

I'm sure most of it has to do with most games are ports of games for iOS devices. I know tvOS and iOS are supposedly the same (or at least share a majority of their code) but you'd think they'd play similar to a iPhone 6.

Oh yeah I mean I think SOME do. But others (faster paced games) do not. I often wonder if there is just some negligence on porting on the behalf of the developer or if it's "just supposed to work" but somehow the ATV just doesn't have the balls that the newer iOS devices to. Not that these are good games, but the examples I know of offhand are Asphalt 8 and that game that is like Race the Sun. I remember SIGNIFICANT hitching and otherwise non-smoothness. Simpler games or more slow-paced games seem to work a bit better.

It's a little disconcerting, though...

Can you give some examples? For instance my Hue lights (the porch one anyways) turn on at Sunset and off at Sunrise like clockwork.

I just tried every light in my house. One by one, scheduled via Home's Automation tab. Not a single one responded.

Here's how wonky it's being...

I sign out of iCloud on ATV. Sign in, Home tab in accounts is not there. Eventually shows up. Once it does, my Automation screens on my iPad and my iPhone 7+ become active (no longer a static info screen.)

I set up my first automation: turn on Kitchen Counter hue light at 3:45pm. All settings are good. Make sure it's set to on, every day, etc...

Wait for 3:45... nothing happens.

(Same for every light except once or twice I got a random light to turn on via automation... but couldn't reproduce it.

** in regular Home (not Automations) I have full control over every Hue light. Works great there. Just not able to automate anything.

From a performance standpoint is the Apple TV 4 weak in terms of its components when it comes to gaming? Every single game I've ever played on the Apple TV ranges from "this is worse than an iPhone or iPad in terms of performance" to "Holy poo poo this is a stuttering broken mess!"

Horizon Chase is the latest. It stutters and jitters, and it even just freezes up and stops responding to any input forcing a force-quit.
