Royal's manager Ned Yost's tactics are so different from how most every other club in baseball is playing right now it is melting the brains of all the money ball statistics-based nerd experts who can not understand why the Royals win when the math clearly shows they should not. Yost is doing what in Magic: The Gathering is called "playing the metagame". Standard "correct" baseball philosophy had become to turtle up on defense while playing a slow and deliberate offense that, according to all the statisticians, was the most mathematically sound guarantee of winning. So Yost has formed an offensive strategy specifically designed to out-score and overwhelm the slow-and-steady style everyone else is using. It is exactly what happened in Magic years back when the metagame was dominated by control decks that were 90% defense and 10% offense. To counter this a group of players that included a dude named Paul Sligh invented an all-red deck style that was 100% offense. Because it is impossible for a 100% defensive deck to win the Sligh decks were statistically guaranteed to make so many offensive plays that the control decks couldn't defend against everything.

I keep meeting people who insist that baseball can be enjoyable to watch but I don't believe it and have yet to see it demonstrated. If you enjoy baseball you probably also enjoy loving math and looking at numbers on a stat sheet or whatever dumb poo poo.
