Republican Governor Mike Pence says not giving food to the unemployed will 'ennoble' them

quote:

The Indiana Family and Social Services Administration announced last month that beginning in 2015, it would no longer request a waiver to the federal work requirement for certain people who use the SNAP program. Up to 65,000 single Hoosiers could lose food stamp benefits unless they are working 20 hours a week or attending job training.
Speaking to Fox News on Tuesday, Pence argued that 50,000 people had joined the Indiana workforce since 2008 so it was time to return to a "core principle" of welfare reform. [...]

"I'm someone that believes there's nothing more ennobling to a person than a job," Pence insisted. "And to make sure that able-bodied adults without dependants at home know that here in the state of Indiana, we want to partner with them in their success."

"It's been working, so it's time to burn it down"

I love my lovely state, hopefully the enormous backlash he's been getting for gutting education and the lasting black eye the whole stupid religious freedom bill caused are enough to get him turfed out

The Indiana Turnpike debacle should be a warning to everyone about the failure of modern "Public Private Partnerships". It's a textbook example of privatizing profits while socializing costs. Gov Kasich (sp?) gets a bump from me for not falling for that bullshit and selling off the Ohio Turnpike to the same group.

Driving around Indy, I feel like everything inside of the 465 circle is going to revert back to dirt roads while everything immediately outside of it is going to be on its third revamp, is my hunch correct?

Hooray for the efficiency of private business! Thankfully I'm in Bloomington now and the roads here are pretty good. All I really need aside from local ones is 37 south which will at least be the last of the southern IN roads to be ceded to the jungle

While the discussion has been an interesting one, I must confess that my assertion that Missouri is part of the deep south was erroneous. I consider it a southern state despite how northerly it is because of traditional boundaries, and also because it's like Florida Man Lite as far as news coverage goes. It's definitely not deep south though. I was posting tired and my old habit of confusing Missouri with Mississippi location-wise sprang up.

The sweet tea test is bunk now. You can walk into any Steak N Shake or a hundred other chain restaurants in the north and get a "proper" sweet tea, because all that is is just lovely tea with as much sugar as you can mix in while it is hot, because if it's hot you can mix more in. The only reliable tests are the dogwhistle per sentence ratio test and the fried chicken test.

I didn't want to cause a derail in the GOP Primary thread but I did want to ask a question that I was reminded of there. Is there a good reason why inert gas is off the table for executions, or is it really just a bloodlust thing? States don't like to experiment with execution procedures because it leads to more difficult court challenges. Also, anything that can fairly be described as a "gas chamber" has obvious PR problems no matter how humane it is.

I thought gas chamber was just the public face of it. The more specific term is nitrogen asphyxiation. Not that Kansas wouldn't stretch this to let them execute people using mustard gas or anything. Doesn't it have a precedent of being used that can be called on?

Personally, I'm in favor of no executions but the realist in me wants them to at least be painless.

Yeah I can see how it would be a dicey issue to anybody who doesn't work at OSHA or in industry that has to deal with how scary this stuff can be in regards to killing you before you realize you're being killed
