I'm a minority in that I actually like power spikes in EO - it gives you something to push forward for and opens up the game tremendously at each step. The slow, gradual growth of the earlier entries and their remakes gets stale to me, and I like actually having points where things expand and you feel considerably more powerful. A lot of people disliked it because it made the early game feel weaker, I guess? EO4 was where class balance was at its best, though, and even early it didn't feel any worse than any of the previous games' early parts.
