I have an old Mandolin from the 1950s that's a bit of an off shape/size. I'm looking to do some travelling with it coming up this winter, and I'm in the market for a good case. I really like the durafoam ones that are at once soft/hard. However, I can't just buy a regular A-style mandolin case, as it would almost certainly be too big. What I'd really like is a durafoam case that is UNCUT or UNSHAPED, so that I could cut out the foam myself to fit the instrument perfectly. Does such an item exist for purchase? Has anybody ever done this or heard of anybody doing it? Any info/advice appreciated!

You could always buy a Pelican case that comes full of a solid block of foam that is pre-cut into 1/2" strips that you just tear out by hand until you have whatever custom shape you need. It's not an "instrument" case per se, but these things are very near indestructible, and a mandolin-sized one wouldn't be too expensive. http://www.amazon.com/Pelican-1510-000-110-Carry-Case-Black/dp/B0002SKHIK/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1446503362&sr=8-2&keywords=pelican+case
