The glitch where the map shows double the actual amount of settlers in a town, with a corresponding hit to happiness, still seems to be occurring but a little less often. Yesterday I noticed that Covenant suddenly claimed to have 58 settlers and had already dropped a good 10 points of happiness. Now every time I fast travel I try to check a few settlements just to watch for the stupid glitch.

Prior to Automatron dropping it was happening more often, and I was hoping it was gone completely, but it does seem to still be a thing.

Also, been getting a little frustrated trying to find Gene to buy another junkyard dog and Kelly to buy a brahmin. Found Gene at least four times, but the first time was early on and I was too poor to buy a dog. It's kind of a pain that you can only send a dog to a settlement that isn't at max population, but now I have Boston Airport and the Mechanist Lair as holding tanks if need be. And I just need Kelly to send a brahmin to Starlight Drive-In - for some reason it has nor brahmin and none are showing up, even though I can see three wild brahmin spawn just outside the build area.

If you're on PC you can get mods that add craftable dogs and Brahmin (and cats and gorillas).

Yeah, I'm on PC - I lost my patience and used the console to add a dog to some of my settlements, but when I used it to spawn a Brahmin the thing wasn't assignable. I probably just need to look up the proper command for it.

I'm avoiding mods due to them reportedly making the game more crash-prone. Just using the console for a few things has been more than sufficient.

I'm cranking them out at a few settlements already, but keeping a steady supply of softshell mirelurk meat is a bit of a slog.

I'm also roaming around to harvest wild mutfruit in order to swamp my settlements with synth gorillas. I already have a couple in Sanctuary and it looks like they tend to hang out with each other. :kimchi:

Meh, it is easy enough to find wild mutfruit - there are 4 or 5 just between Sanctuary and Abernathy Farm. I use the console to duplicate some of the ones I pick up to pad out the amount as needed.

They're pretty popular on Reddit.
Little thing I noticed in the trailer, the poster that says 'Welcome to Far Harbor', the F is a B that has been damaged over the years.

So they're not just referencing Bar Harbor, it is Bar Harbor.

I have at least eight cats in Sanctuary, with bowls to attract them to certain areas. There might be a cap on how much they can raise a settlement's happiness, but they're doing a good job so far. I'm now limted only by my lack of Softshell-type mirelurk meat.

CaptainSarcastic

I should do a cat census on my settlements. I eventually realized that the Automatron dog cages can also attract junkyard dogs, so that largely addressed my difficulties with getting sufficient dogs for settlements. I have a shitload of gorillas roaming around, too, but I have noticed they tend to cause more glitches than other animals. They get stuck on scenery and start to have seizures, basically, making a terrible noise and dropping the FPS of the game if you are too close to it.

I've noticed that sound seems to have an impact on how well my game runs - too many noisy things in a small area and performance drops significantly. Scrapping generators and turrets around my workbench in Sanctuary made the game run better there. Also more detailed light sources like the construction lights seem to impact performance. The lighting when you fast travel into Goodneighbor is similar in how it looks, and has a similar impact on my performance. Once I get out of the lighting of the courtyard everything speeds back up and runs smoother.

I'm thinking Lone Wanderer probably makes Survival difficulty a lot less of a pain in the rear end, too. Massive boost to carrying capacity, defense boost and a late-game universal damage boost all in one perk tree.

Yeah I took the first level of lone wanderer just to get me through establishing a settlement or three, which will be a rough adjustment once I go to arcjet for my first companion jaunt. I'll have to give up at least 2 of my guns and half my ammo :qq:

Yeah Lone Wanderer + pocketed armour mods are a lifesaver. I went from 130 or so carry weight right up to 215 or so + 30 for dogmeat.

You could also just have codsworth as a follower because his little jetbutt can still carry mountains of junk. He's noisy as gently caress too so it's funny to send him into a ghoul-infested building as bait.

And if you get into robot crafting, robots can get pocketed armor for more carrying capacity too. Plus that perk that lets companions carry more junk for you.

Not being able to carry everything that isn't nailed down and being cautious is the best way to play Fallout.

It raises an interesting point -- there aren't any tribals in FO4. I guess it's long enough after the apocalypse that they've been absorbed or advanced, though I guess you might argue that the Atom cultists and maybe the Diamond City reverence for the Wall have that spirit, though that latter is pretty weak tea.

It's in Cages, I think in the Arena subsection. Make sure you have 1 point in Wasteland Whisperer and Animal Friend or it won't work.

Hahaha. Yeah. You can build the cages just fine beforehand, but without the Beta Wave Emitter the monsters will just be hostile to everything on release. Still useful if you need specific enemy materials to farm. I've seen one guy build a slaughterhouse full of Gunner cages and unleashing them periodically to hock all their gear after killing them.

Make sure you only have one type of monster per settlement because they tend to go nuts and kill each other on sight otherwise. Also, the game doesn't warn you about this, but keeping a caged monster of a type for a while will incite an attack by a bunch of monsters of that type. I had a mirelurk cage for a while in the drive-in and one day it became swarmed with crabs from hell.

Yeah, me too. But being forced to think about what to take or not take with me is a pleasant challenge. Plus, no bullet-sponges!

Survival Mode apparently came out on all consoles at once. I really should have booted it up or looked online but I was cleaning up on another game.

Now, I know it was answered many, many pages back, but what was the tip for scavenging only the best items? Do something with (temporarily remove?) all wood, steel and... something and then mark every item in the Workshop to flag materials when you put your reticle over them?

I get the feeling this will become very important in Survival Mode.

The easiest way to tag things is putting a bunch of junk in your inventory, going into the junk page on your pip boy, and then pressing L1 or whatever button is labeled for component view. From there, you can tag and untag different materials. Screws, gears, aluminum, fiberglass, adhesive, nuclear material, ballistic fiber, and springs are all things I keep tagged. I'm sure there's a few more but that's the majority of them off the top of my head.

edit: fiber optics, oil, copper, and circuitry are the others. i also keep ceramic tagged for a while, but with coffee cups loving everywhere you can build up a huge stockpile of them really quickly.

Seeing how effective Tier 3 Ghoulish is at making some ghouls not want to kill you should also be interesting. (I long for the days when Animal Friend just made *all* animals not want to kill you...)
