Those Alpha Legion models look fantastic. I'm looking to get into this 30k business simply for the models, maybe moving to play later. Is the Betrayal at Calth board game still the easiest way in for a Legion army? e: I'm in Australia, so BaC is $265, so steeper than I'd like. I'm leaning towards just ordering some Mk II or III armour dudes and giving them a whirl first to see if I want to continue. Endman fucked around with this message at 03:52 on Jan 3, 2016 |

Thanks for the advice; looks like I'll be trawling eBay when I get back home. Now I just have to figure out which colour of tiny resin dolls to paint. Leaning towards the traitor legions. Maybe Thousand Sons. Gotta love that scarab beetle aesthetic.

Just nabbed a Tac Squad from the BaC box on eBay for $38 AUD, that'll satisfy my space marine painting itch for the moment. Until I have enough of them to actually play 30k properly, I'll probably use them for Kill Team as Chaos or regular Space Marines. Unless there's a similar squad-level game mode in the actual book.

I love the use of the Mk IV helmet instead of the default bare-head for that model. I may have to steal that idea for my World Eaters.

EC rule because you can field Rylanor the Unyielding. I subscribe to the Hollywood rule of deaths; you don't see him die, so he doesn't die at Istvaan III.

Would it be possible to make an army out of a mishmash of loyalist leftovers from the Istvaan III atrocity commanded by, for example, Garro?

Should I be using the Emperor's Children Rite of War to get the most out of footslogging marines, or should I shove them into rhinos regardless of the bonus to running?

LordAba posted:There is no reason not to take apoth with bigger units of tacs. It fits EC fluff as well! The outflank really helps gets you stuck in as you can set up a lot of anti-tank shooting into the sides of vehicles. A couple of big Tac blobs + Apothecary seems like a solid choice for my compulsories. BULBASAUR posted:The EC ROW is really strong as it lets you outflank 3 units of your choice on a turn you choose in the order you want. In a game where most of your oponnents will have very predictable armies that plod their way slowly towards you, this gives you an edge. One combo I always talk about- lightning, seeker squad, veteran squad. Lightning comes in and blows up a spartan with krakens. Seekers roll up, mark the contents for death, and fire x10 rapid fire BS5 plasma bolts with re-rolls to 1s. The veterans show up with ~4 power weapons and some melta guns to mop up anything alive and then claim an objective. I've been looking for an excuse to buy a Lightning sometime in the future, because it's such a rad looking model. Looks like this is what I've been looking for!

I agree about the resin. There's no way I'd even be playing if it wasn't for the BaC box being plastic. I don't mind the occasional resin figure, but not in the quantities and easily-warped panels of vehicles.

In light of the recent new rules, how would you guys recommend running a Blood Angels Veteran Tactical squad? I was thinking a couple of meltas and around 3-4 power weapons, maybe a power axe + melta bombs on the sergeant? I'm not sure the Hand Flamer or Inferno Pistol are worth 15 points.

Shame about the legion rules. They'd gel a lot better with RoWs that focused on large formations of infantry, given the D3 victory points you can give your opponent by being outnumbered at the end.

I've been working in some ruins terrain lately, and it seems like some of the pieces could be modded to make a workable (albeit generic stone and not sci-fi grimdark spaceship specific) ZM setup. The half-way height (up to the gap where the floor gets inserted) on the 2-stories ruins below is about 2.25" or 2.5". Looks like I have some experimenting to do. There's no reason you couldn't play Zone Mortalis in labyrinthine ruins, the interior of a castle, a cave network, hell even a hedge maze. Just make up some different fluff to accommodate some of the more space oriented stuff
