If you think you're gonna get sympathy from the shark, well then, you won't.

It’s neat how Thorsby’s minimalist art and flat affect storytelling nevertheless managed to absolutely nail the whole “guy talking to you in a bar” experience.

It only says she got a degree and started working as a zookeeper -- not that she enjoyed it more than working at the bar :(

It is certainly more in line with her interests (and all the stuff she knows about various beasts) but I was hoping she'd actually look happy is all! Poor Klara.

I think you guys might be forgetting that Klara has the same expression on her face no matter what she's doing or how she's feeling (except for the last panel when she's posing for a portrait).

I don't think so, I think everyone just knows she's like that and doesn't mind it that much.

I mean it's probably easier to read a human who doesn't emote than most of the other races they coexist with fairly happily.

Man, I always feel a little empty space in my week when a Thorsby comic comes to a close. Glad to read the ending, but sad to see it go.

What are you talking about? Audrey fixed her crucial flaw of not owning three taverns, a casino, and a novelty dildo factory.

In hindsight, I think Thorsby's comics work better if you're reading them in one go rather than spread out over a few years. At least if your memory is as bad as mine. I've forgotten about some characters that made a return and wrongly thought some scenes from this comic were actually from other Thorsby ones.

With Thorsby being Thorsby, I was nervous right up until "The End" that there'd be some sort of twist. This comic's brightened my Mondays and Fridays for the last several years and I'm really going to miss it. I should get Thorsby a present or something (not that I have any address to send it to).

This was a wonderful comic and it & Hitmen are pretty much equal in my mind insofar as Thorsby's comics go. Hitmen was grander in scale but I really like how Thorsby's stories have gained more narrative consistency over time; Trixie wrapped all the storylines neatly and without extraneous stuff (not that I mind the extraneous stuff either in Thorsby comics, though.)

Fats Dominar is on the case

I think Thorsby has steadily been getting better. Hitmen is about level with Space Spy for me, with Brain Chip being a bit below them, but I think that's less because of a lack of skill and more because he tackled a really, really high-concept setting and didn't quite stick the landing in parts. But the quality of his art has been improving over time, and the sophistication (not the same thing as complexity!) of his plots and characterization has improved too. I'm really excited to see what he does next.

                  tell me...
i sent him an email with some questions:

thorsby posted:

When writing comics, do you tend to have the whole story planned out before you start writing them or do you add things as you go?

Thank you very much. The story is planned out in broad strokes. Significant changes to the characters are planned out. Less important things happening in individual storylines might or might not be planned out. Action sequences are often not planned out before I get to the storyline.

With the Last Cupcakes storyline I knew from the start that Audrey and Lyndon would betray Trixie. I knew there's be 3 cupcakes, that the first time Audrey destroys one we would not see it, the second we'd see it and the third Lyndon would see it. I knew there would be a gravity spell and zombies and that at some point Audrey would fall sideways onto zombies and kill them. Beyond that i didn't know much until I started writing the storyline.

I don't think it's that hard to keep a story short, if you plan it out. If you have too many ideas, just focus on the best ones and ditch the rest.

When updating Trixie, did you tend to draw the comic right before it updated, or did you have a backlog?

When I start a comic I'll have at least a ten strip backlog. The backlog tends to grow over time.

What do you use to draw the comics?

I use a wacom tablet and a program called paint.net. I used to use Microsoft Paint, not recommended.

Is there a new comic planned?

I have ideas for more comics, but I'm not entirely sure if I'll make more. Probably, but not soon.
