I find this whole bOoMeR iS a SlUr thing hillarious because boomers have been gobbling up "boomer" themed poo poo since they were old enough to have their own money eg Which is from 1983, and older than the people who are giving them poo poo on twitter.

I went and checked out my twitter interests list and I'm now convinced that a major reason that twitter doesn't get rid of the nazis (in addition to Jack being a nazi) is that people hating/watching/opposing/keeping an eye on the nazis produces ~engagement~ Anyway I manually unchecked everything except "Weird Al Yankovic" and "egg"

christmas boots posted:Today I learned about Elagabalus, a Roman emperor who may* have been trans. Oh man last time I looked at it Elagabalus's wikipedia page was a terrible battleground of bad edits and citations by people who really really want Elagabalus to be trans and people who really really don't want Elagabalus to be trans, to the extent that they were fighting over English pronouns for someone who lived centuries before any of those pronouns even existed. Like, fine, I get that you don't want historical trans erasure, but if you're going to respect Elagabalus's self-identification, you need to make sacrifices to him as the incarnation of the Syrian sun god Sol Invictus. Also of all of the Emperors to get obstinately obsessed about defending who picks Elagabalus.

MizPiz posted:Honestly, I think trying to claim Elagabalus is trans does way more harm to the trans community than it helps. They were basically patient zero for all the worst stereotypes of queer people. This is parallel to my distaste for the last wave of this kind of research, namely the "such and such figure was actually gay" psychoanalytic history.

Smackdillion posted:I just asked a question. What about that situation makes you think a surprise is the correct way to handle it? Framing my response here - I'm cis and male. But I try to listen to what people have to say about their experiences, and you're about to hear a whole bunch, so don't take it as an attack when it comes. Listen to what these other posters have to say. But the short version is that when your identity can result in someone else killing you, it's 100% pragmatic to get a sense of what someone else is about and to decide if you trust that person before you reveal that aspect of your identity.

Mak0rz posted:What does "economically left but socially conservative" look like, exactly? Free healthcare for people who don't miscegenate? It's the creation of socialism for a select in-group which is created by purging undesirables and seizing their assets. It's literally the only sense in which Naziism can be understood as socialism - socialism for the chosen "nation".

Punkin Spunkin posted:I also dont know if this is harry potter lady's fault but boy do there seem to be more numerous or at least more vocal British TERFs, right? Someone in another thread summarized it as there being some big british mother/parenting website, mumsnet or something? That became an online wine mom hangout, and much in the way that many other websites spiralled into naziism, it spiralled into terfdom, and it's the core of all of the terf stuff in the UK

I don't know where else to ask this question but it seems thematically appropriate - This Logan Paul guy keeps popping up in the boxing threads, and I know him as the Japan suicide forest guy, but lately people have been saying things like "lol that's him at his best" - anyone care to give me a very quick summary of the guy?

I'm really surprised that no theorist like Homi Bhabha has coined a term for that kind of collaborator. Though as I type it "minority collaborator" seems to hit all of the notes necessary. I know I've seen "collaborator" used in this respect, though I can't recall with what adjectives.

Absurd Alhazred posted:From her Wikipedia page: Meh his CV is fine for a Master's thesis on something like that. Historicist literary scholars spend plenty of time working with primary and secondary historical sources, and there's plenty of good work in that Venn overlap between LITERARY STUDIES and HISTORY. The problem is that space has just as many lovely pop scholars proportionally, maybe even more, that non-literary history. For every Steven Zwicker or Nicholas von Maltzahn (who you've never heard of, but who do ridiculously rigorous archival work) there are ten Naomi Wolfs who look at one source and say some poo poo.

Absurd Alhazred posted:But it wasn't a Master's, it was a PhD. And what tripped her up seems to be specifically history rather than literary studies. Or, I guess, basic reading comprehension? We've all known garbage scholars. I'm not defending her work. I'm just noting that at a glance her tutor's CV and literary background seems fine for supervising that project (if you exclude Wolf's work lol)

That Zuckerberg was or wasn't poor is a canard there. Using literally one of the most unpredictably and inexplicably successful businesses ever as a target is the worst kind of survivorship bias. The tweet or whatever suggests that a person can start a thing and will themselves into being a billionaire. Might as well just buy lottery tickets.

I like when the fight sport posters jump into another thread to talk about fight sports. You non fight sport watching people have no idea how much funny idiocy there is. A prominant MMA fighter in his 40s for e.g. just gave an interview declaring that "Number is just an age." He has talked like that since his 20s.
