Hello! Welcome to my second Let's Play series! This time I want to talk about one of my favorite oddities of Nintendo history, the Famicom Disk System.

What is the Famicom Disk System?
It was an add-on to the Japanese version of the NES, the Famicom, which added a floppy disc drive to the console.

So, it's just a floppy disk drive?
No, it also added an additional sound chip that produced a very wave-like sound unlike any other sound chip.

Is that it?
...Yeah, pretty much.

So why should I care about it?
It was the launchpad for a handful of Nintendo franchises like the Legend of Zelda and Metroid. It also had some very bizarre stuff on it.

I heard it also had a bunch of crap on it.
Yes, but it was bizarre and foreign crap!

Do I need to know Japanese to play these games?
Not for a majority of them, but there are definitely a few that demand some knowledge of Japanese.

So are you going to be covering every game on the system?
No, there are two categories of games I won't cover.
  • Adventure games that require extensive knowledge of Japanese.
  • Porn. Of which there is a disturbingly large amount.

Are you covering them in any particular order?
Nope. I'm just covering the ones I feel like covering at the time. That being said, I am open to requests.

Are you playing these games to completion?
No. Maybe a few, but this series is meant to be an overview of the games rather than a full play of them.

Anyway, onto the videos!

Descriptive Videos:
An Introduction to the Famicom Disk System

Game Videos:
The Mysterious Murasame Castle
Knight Move
Seiken Psycho Calibur

Santa Claus' Toybox

I've got a new video up.

Knight Move

It's a puzzle game made by none other than Alexey Pajitnov of Tetris fame.
It's simple, but really fun.

I like your thread: it's about a system I know very little about, and I'm always interested in game history or games that I haven't had a lot of contact with. I know very little about the Famicom and never had any contact with it, so I'll be following this thread with interest.

Mysterious Murasame Castle looks like it has a lot of charm to it. It's a game I can tell I would've enjoyed as a kid, as does Knight Move. I had no idea that the creator of Tetris did anything else!

I love the Famicom Disk System. :allears: Sure, its library is full of absolute crap, and the hardware itself is less reliable than a launch Xbox 360 (the drive belt will break at some point) and it's a bit janky in general, but there's just something about it. For one, the clicking sound it makes when you insert a disk is one of the most satisfying sounds in all of videogaming.

Here's my FDS running Castlevania. Unfortunately, playing it on the Disk System doesn't make me any better at it, but at least there are save slots!

New post!

This time we are going look at a somewhat generic Zelda clone that had at least a little bit of heart put into it.

That's only half of it :ssh: (also I want a 32X but I'm not sure American ones will play nice with my euro megadrive even though it has a 50/60Hz switch and plays games from all regions, and PAL 32Xs are ridiculously expensive)

[e] Content: I finally watched the introduction video, and the custom Famicom/NES in that looks quite interesting. What is that?

I'd assume it does. I'm not sure. I haven't gotten too far in the game.

@Doc
It's a Generation NEX. It's an okay Famiclone that outputs stereo sound and had support for wireless controllers. The company that made them has been defunct for quite some time. My biggest gripe with it is that sound output isn't quite accurate and sometimes doesn't play at all.

That was really neat. Up until now we've seen games that, with a little bit of gumption, could have been converted to cartridge just like Metroid and Zelda were. This game however is totally centered on the FDS' upgraded sound processor. Also, it's a shame it never got any more popular, it'd be interesting to see what people would have done with the sound-as-game sub-genre at such an earlier point in game history than how things went where it didn't really come into consciousness til the PS2 era with games like Rez and Frequency.

Yeah, most of the games could very easily be cartridge games.
The next game I'm covering also technically uses the disk format in a very... odd way.

This really feels like it could have been so much more.

At least we have some moderately creepy holiday music...
