We're all hipsters on the inside. What music do you listen to that nobody's heard of? I really like a rapper called Busdriver. I asked one of my friends if she had heard of him and she said "I don't ride the bus, sorry." edit: I should really have posted a link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ERE8HX2KE0 nerd plus rage has a new favorite as of 03:14 on Nov 17, 2015 |

Oh man, I have a buttload of these. I'll only share a couple right now though, first ones that come to mind. First is Eskimo, a band whose website my ex discovered a few years ago, preserved in its turn-of-the-millennium glory. They released a new(?) album last year, but my introduction to them was this record, The Further Adventures Of Der Shrimpkin. The best description I can muster is that they sound like the best parts of the background music in quirky 90s point-and-click adventure games crossed with a drunken jazz ensemble: https://eskimo.bandcamp.com/album/the-further-adventures-of-der-shrimpkin Next is The Shanners, a punk rock band from London who broke up back in 2009 with only a couple of EPs and an album produced, but what an album. Sarky and searing, my favourite song is probably Flex Plexico: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qqA-WfFYJM And on a totally different angle, a trip hop band called Second Person, also sadly not around any more. Earnest and sweet, with great vocals and drum work. I'm particularly fond of their Elements EP: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTolvLVzkfw Gertrude Perkins has a new favorite as of 00:35 on Nov 17, 2015 |

I want to say Nekrogoblikon or Red Fang, but a few million views on Youtube probably means more than a few people know about them (and I think that a Red Fang song was used in a Super Bowl commercial). Queens of The STone Age are an obscure rock band that makes really good music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DcHKOC64KnE Macklemore is kind of unknown but with his amazing flow and controversial topics it's no doubt that he'll be a star soon. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DcHKOC64KnE Not sure what I could say about The Lonely Island but they're really good https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TICjEsvC8o

The Essex Green. Nothing special, just really catchy, clever and fun 60s-inspired folky pop. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p00YFaQjQMs This is basically the loveliest song ever written about driving through poo poo towns along Route 30 in Pennsylvania.

Gonna have to go with Amoc here. He's a Finnish rapper who performs in his native language Inari Sami, which currently has less than 300 living speakers. Tends to collaborate with a lot of other Finns. http://youtu.be/S_Xkq_d85Ec It's just weird as hell, hearing nearly-dead languages used in such a contemporary setting.

Life at Sea. I don't even know know if they're around anymore; last new material AFAIK was released in 2012. But their best stuff was released in 2003. Kind of a Sunny Day Real Estate sort of vibe. Saw them in college on their way through Athens, GA; they gave a hell of a show for a dive bar crowd of a dozen and were friendly to everyone sticking around after the gig was over. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVtvll-v-p8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x40E_XX9BVQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGRDFfZBWlY

Ribboncandy. My favorite band. They were apparently a local band in the mid 90s and put out a couple tapes on tiny labels. Accidentally saw them play a reunion show while driving around western Massachusetts a couple years back and got their "complete recordings" CD. Can't find anything about them online really. They were opening for Bunnygrunt who are also a great pop group who could probably qualify as "obscure". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5KObm6Qm-0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMjyd4Bbsek

Busdriver is pretty well-known within his niche, OP. I'm in Ireland and most people I've met who are into non-mainstream hiphop have heard of him. Plus he turns up on a so many collaborations. By no means disparaging him or anything, he's probably been my overall most-played artist over the past year. I nominate Ten Kens. Ethereal but also very visceral gloomy alt-rock(?) I guess. Kind of psychedelic and noise-rocky as well. One of the best bands of all time imho.

I suppose Foxy Shazam could be considered obscure : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tg4CPaKzSUU They were a sick rear end loving awesome local band that blew up for a good two years. They disbanded and now Eric Nally, the lead, appeared in some god awful poo poo loving music thing called Mackelmore or some other stupid poo poo and people are starting to like him more. I know this because I started getting tons of emails from youtube that a bunch of teenagers started commenting on an old video of mine talking about how all the losers are just now discovering Eric Nally... Music fans can be stupid as gently caress (if you want to see check these comments out : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0_YKiFtn9s ) They did get some national recognition I believe, but I'd say they still count as obscure.

I'm not sure if this is cheating, because I'm friends with them, but I swear I would be super into Bent Knee even if I weren't, seeing as I love weird, experimental progressive rock. They're one hell of a live band, if you happen to get the chance to see them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCU_lScCpAM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wv8aTTQN47Y They're starting to get a lot more national press lately, which is awesome, but they're definitely obscure.

Tusmørke. A Norwegian band that plays a sort of psychedelic prog/folk-rock. Have been an ongoing thing since 1994 but only started getting stuff released in 2012 (the core members have been active in various other bands alongside this one). Take a peek at this thing, which has Norwegian lyrics about the primal bits of our brains and cleverly uses video footage from an old documentary about an American snake-handler church: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4qgOFgkaYU
