I'd have to go with Miracle Legion, a band formed by singer Mark Mulcahy and guitarist Ray Neal in 1983. Okay, so they may not be the most obscure, as they seemed to float just underneath the surface of commercial success throughout their career. They had videos in MTV rotation throughout the 1980s, signed to a major record label in the early 90s, had an album produced by John Porter (who has worked with The Smiths, etc), and even made an appearance on David Letterman. However, Morgan Creek, the aformentioned major label that they were briefly signed to, folded shortly after the release of their first and last major label album. It ended up where the band couldn't release any new material for years afterwards. After independently putting out one more album in the mid-90s, the band called it quits, with singer Mulcahy going on to eke out a solo career (highly recommended as well)

Here is one of their most well known songs, The Backyard, off of their 1984 EP of the same name.

A few years later, in 1989, they put out Me & Mr. Ray, my personal favorite by them.

Here is their Letterman performance from 1992.
