Electing Washington would be pretty funny in a dickish way.

Voted Andrew Jackson because I vote based purely on '5 most badass presidents' lists on Cracked.

Jesus. This election is such a clusterfuck. I guess i'm going anti-masonic because Wirt seems least worst.

Frelinghuysen seems like a decent sort. Shame he's only VP.

Kind of tempted to vote Southern Rights just to have an insanely ahistorical swing to right instead of left this time.

What I've learned in this thread: the British in the 1800s were even more racist than I previously thought.

I find it a little surprising. Not the racism itself but the fact they seemed to be on the side of the confederates. By the time of the civil war, slavery had been illegal for like 80 years on British soil, the slave trade was banned in 1807 and it was banned in every colony by 1843.

I think British support was less ideological and more practical they basically saw it as a opportunity to weaken the United States plus the South was a big trade partner for them. I think I remember reading that a lot of citizens in England had problems with their government unofficially supporting a slavery nation.

Yeah, I wasn't shocked at the government doing it but those cartoons made it seem like widespread opinion. Maybe it was just the 19th century version of Ramirez.

There's an amazing episode of Whistlestop which talks about the crazy bullshit Blaine pulled to narrowly avoid being impeached for his obvious corruption.

The way John Dickerson tells it: Blaine asked to see the evidence against him after it had been presented in the House. He *stole it*, and then delayed the proceedings for a few days by pretending to be ill. He used that time to arrange for someone in the Senate to drop out of the Senate and for Blaine to be nominated in his place. Since Blaine was no longer in the House, the House couldn't impeach him. Since the Senate didn't have the evidence proving he was corrupt (conveniently lost), the Senate couldn't impeach him. Presidential material there.

Yeah, here are the links to the two episodes, one on Blaine and one on Grover:

People think US elections have got crazier as time goes on but some absolutely batshit stuff happened in the past.

The man had to stand there and receive the shot, I'm surprised Jackson didn't try to just beat him to death with his pistol instead of even firing.

I would have just jumped out of the way. Sure, everyone would give you poo poo about having no honour and jackson could clown on you for the rest of your life but at least you'd have a rest of your life.

Hey, literally today I mentioned in the GOP thread that I missed this thread and here it is. Voting for a glorious socialist republic.

Also what's the deal with the Preseident and VP candidate of the People's Party? It doesn't seem like they have anything in common other than hating foreigners.

Bryan sounds quite good, so I'll vote for him. It will be interesting to actually vote for a party that stood a chance of victory instead of the Socialists again.
