Terriers > all other small dogs. I have a pair of miniature schnauzers that were 7 and 4 when I got them and have been some of the best dogs ever. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5bIW882OR8 Pro:     Con: They take up much more space than expected in my bed and work together to push me onto the floor. One of them has a really strong drive to chase cats, birds, and squirrels, while the other has killed and attempted to eat various snakes and lizards.
