November 2019: The game is going to be receiving support again, so I'm going to overhaul the OP. For now, I'm just cleaning some of the outdated chaff.

So, Payday 2

Payday 2 Goons Steam group
Payday 2 Skill calculator

As a warning, the vast majority of the playerbase plays the PC version of the game. The 360/PS3 versions were never really updated past their release state, and I can only assume the Bone/PS4 versions don't have much of a playerbase.

Payday 2 is about murdering law enforcement officers in one of the best co-op shooters on the market. Also about unhealthy amounts of gun love. Think about it as Left 4 Dead, Killing Floor, and Michael Mann's Heat put together, with some RPG elements.

AND HOLY poo poo IT'S IN THE GAME

Yes, pubbies in this game are terrible you should play with goons. Join us on the PD2 Discord. If you have to play with pubs, then host. Otherwise the little Shitlers will kick you before the heist ends or screech at you to stealth a loud-only mission. There was even one guy who's now infamous for actually getting his rocks off on insulting pubbies so that gives you an idea of the community the next time you say you're nervous about asking a Goon (who will show you how the game works and help you out) to play.

Hanging out in the steam group chat and joining the Discord server is the best way to organize a goon group. Some people are pretty jaded on playing this game after two years but whenever DLC gets released or sales happen, there will be an influx of new players that you can catch a ride with. You can ask anyone to play and they'll usually up for a game and especially for showing a newbie around

What’s new with Payday 2 since I stopped playing a long-rear end time ago?

As of late 2019, Overkill plans to return to updating the Payday 2. Even then, after the microtransaction bungle, Overkill pledged to focus on fixing parts of the games and after enough out-roar, refocused their efforts and began overhauling the gameplay and content.

If you've been out of the game since say release day, the biggest gameplay changes have been the skill revamps, weapon rebalances, and perk decks. To sum each one up:

-The skill trees now look completely different and have tons of new skills that reward new types of playstyles. Lots of useless skills were axed and each tree has some really unique and useful stuff. Skills also don't cost money, and you can make multiple profiles.

-The weapon rebalance buffed and nerfed weapons around breakpoints. This means that almost no weapon is bad stats-wise, so when you open up that game for the first time and see a trillion new guns, you don't need to panic because odds are you'll pick a useful one.

-The perk decks were a twofold design of getting rid of the old tier bonuses and as a way of boosting skill sets to do more interesting things. Make sure you take a look in the perk deck section of the inventory ASAP as they're leveled up by you putting points into them manually. Several have been updated vis-a-vis usefulness, and there's a quick guide on them in the second OP.

Other Major Updates

-Safe House Customization. After being halfheartedly promised on release, Overkill finally implemented a customizable new safe house like 3 years later.

-New Difficulties: Mayhem and One Down. Mayhem fits right between Overkill and Death Wish where you'll face Gen Sec elites and Skulldozers, and the enemies are a bit more hearty. One Down is a nightmare mode that lets you only go down once before going into custody, and enemies are ridiculously accurate, hearty, and powerful.

Besides that there's been a mess of content (weapons, masks, characters, etc.), both free and paid. We used to have DLC Buying Guides galore, but Overkill has made it easier and more affordable to just get as many of them as possible. There's also now a proper tutorial in the game now for both loud and stealth for a refresher or new players.

:siren: Multiple free guns, mods, and masks are yours if you join the Official Payday 2 Steam group :siren:

Otherwise, there aren't any objectively bad DLC packs at this point. If you want a weapon, mask, or character, just grab it on sale or something. Worth reiterating that you do not need to own DLC to use paid DLC heists. Owning heist DLC just makes you able to host that heist. You can join on anyone who owns it if you yourself don't own it.

This music is really good! Where can I get it?
It's by a guy named Simon Viklund, who did a really nice job (with 1 track by somewhat-famous techno artist Alesso and a few by Le Castle Vania). If you buy the soundtracks on steam they will be in your Payday 2 folder somewhere.

Game Mechanics and FAQ :words:

M.O.? Is that they're good... Once it escalated into a murder one beef for all of 'em after they killed the first two guards, they didn't hesitate. Teabag guard number three because... what difference does it make?
From Captain Swing

So I Read All That Crap, and I Launched the Game. Now What?

First of all, after a few heists look at the "Perk Deck" tab in the inventory menu. Perk Decks are pre-made decks of general and specific perks built around things like melee, armor, health, dodge chance, etc. Most people will recommend that you equip the Armorer, Muscle, or Crew Chief deck and stick with that until you have it maxed out. By the time you have finished one of those decks, you will probably know enough about the game mechanics to figure out what deck you want to pick next, but any of those are a solid first pick. Make sure you stick with the maxed-out one while just putting points into others because there are things like XP and damage bonuses in the perk decks now.

Here's a quick, unfinished guide to Perk Decks that I made. I'm no expert, so if you can fill in any gaps, please let me know!

There are only a few skills that I recommend all beginners pick, and those are Transporter (throw and carry bags faster), Duck and Cover (Sprint for longer), and Parkour (move faster). These are the most basic QoL of skills. The new trees are intuitive and useful enough that you're hard-pressed to find many useless skills as long as you use your brain a bit. As long as you focus at least a little on survivability, it's hard to screw up your choices.

Just post your builds in the thread and try things out. Enforcer shotgun/armor builds are generally regarded to be the best builds for newbies.

Weapon information
If you didn't join the Steam Payday 2 group like I mentioned above, go and join the Payday 2 Steam group. You get free stuff that'll help you out. Once you do that, you can use a lot of different weapons now for different purposes since the rebalance is done. For Overkill and below, you really can't pick a bad weapon.

The weapon mods system sucks if you're playing 100% vanilla. The Gage Courier and AK/CAR Pack DLCs fixed a chunk of this, but only for things like sights, lasers, and specific weapons. The random drop system is unarguably dumb game-o-fication stuff. There are daily/weekly challenges that you can find in safe house> challenges that will let you pick a general mod for completing the challenge. You can now use Continental Coins to buy parts you want, but they're pretty expensive and use the same coins that you use to pay for safe house upgrades. There's also Goon Mod (look below) that adds a "Gage Coin" system that lets you buy weapons for cheaper than Continental Coin prices, and has Overkill's approval. Failing that, a lot of people cheated in mods and pretty much nobody will look down on you for doing it, but don't discuss it in the thread, don't play with Goons while cheats are on, and don't ask me how to get the cheats. We've had those conversations before and it gets ugly.

Are there any cool mods/tweaks for the game?

Many cool mods can be found here on Last Bullet or http://paydaymods.com/. The latter provides you with the mod injector called BLT that's very easy to use and one of the slickest in-game mod UIs I've ever seen. Be aware that mods frequently break after large patches, but are usually fixed within a day or two with auto-updates.

For those who remember Goon Mod, Wilko was hired by Overkill! And then he left the team! Wilko is back at Overkill! Since he originally got hired, a huge number of Goon Mod features are now in the game including mutators, money that can be used to buy customization equipment, and lots of others.

the problem with the skin thing is the game is going to stop receiving patches in 2 years (i think). at least with tf2 and dota 2 you know they wont release a team fortress 3 or dota 3 any time soon and i'm sure if they did they'd have some kind of item transfer system.

I mean I see it as investment for them. I don't expect this to be a long-term plan for now. The problem I have with it is trying to take these ugly skins and incorporate them into the hype system. The whole hype train has been a bit of a wet fart for these kinds of releases, and that's been for things like genuine game content addition. Now, they've still got the web pages with the gigantic fonts and new looping Viklund track, but now it's for the prospect of paying Overkill to get a random drop of a very ugly weapon skin that may be an heinous turd for the same price of a much better one. They just come off as way too proud of this system that at best people tolerate, and while I agree that the most vocal fools will eventually forget it and move on, they're mostly just taking the wind out of their own sails by trying to build up so much energy for these things.

I finally gave my view on all of this and I hope I never have to again.

The CS Skinning community was pretty cool and chill. It was probably cool because most guys could either do models, UVs, textures, or animations without much overlap, so lots of collaborating happened. It was groovy up until CSBanana (Gamebanana now) came along. Overnight, people were stealing credit for a lot of skins, models, and animations, and posting them on CSBanana, whose owners didn't care. When the thieves were pressed by their "fans" to do more, they would just steal more from lesser-known people on smaller forums to the point where nobody really wanted to release anything to be stolen on CSBanana. What was left of the pre-banana community stayed at cdg.net and eventually died for the most part. I heard Gamebanana's been better about content theft, but gently caress if I can look at their ugly, cluttered site without hating them.

Heat Street had a hefty challenge in that cops could really build up a thick defense. Hox Breakout's cops barely get a chance to set up before getting mowed down, which is kind of my problem with PD2 these days. Part of why I like the Lab Rats cloaker holdout is that It's a great big old clusterfuck where you're not just mowing down cops who can't shoot back. It's also why I'd like to do Green Bridge again. That mission required a lot of coordination and would be pretty great in PD2.

Can you explain why Muscle is better than Armorer?

Armorer is still alright if you can use it well, even better if you throw in Aced Bulletproof to help your team out a little more. Muscle is great for self-preservation, though. You won't be going down on DW as easily, and that 4% regen doesn't mean you're going to be stuck with that 10% health after a revive for very long (arguably the biggest problem on DW runs back in the day). I mix it with Hostage Taker for DW runs and almost never go down, but YMMV.

What's the 40 damage break point? Don't DW with a weapon under 40?

40 doesn't mean as much as it used to. Before perk decks, it was the breakpoint to one-headshot greens, and two-head tans. Now everyone with a perk deck gets the headshot bonus multiplier so some miniscule number is the new one for greens, and some 38 or 39 point-whatever number is the one for tans. Realistically, getting your damage up really only matters for some shotguns rare situations with sniper rifles, or if you're doing Deathwish these days.

Lots of people like to chat numbers and that's cool, but if someone tells you a gun is useless or you shouldn't firing it while moving or from the hip(barring semi-auto shotties), then they're bad at shooters and try to make up for it number-shaming.

The reason I say try things out is because the other thread turned dick-waving with essays about stats that's a little much for newcomers. I'd rather encourage people to try things out and don't worry the game can be fun no matter what numbers are as long as you are a team player. It gets even worse when you tell someone you're enjoying your experience with the game, and someone is telling you you're enjoying it in the wrong because you're not exploiting every inch of it. It's part of why I trimmed a lot of the guides and stuff from the OP, because I hate opening up an OP and the first thing I see is sperg-posting about numbers and which mods to get before you even try to start up the game. Fire up the game, shoot some cops, notice what you like, and talk about it. If you're not sure about something in the game, ask around and I'll throw up some advice in the OP.
