the entire audience of engineers chuckled and the speaker went OH THE HYPERLOOP THAT'S THE TECHNOLOGY POWERED BY ITS USERS SCREAMS and i nearly fell outta my chair

buses are crap b/c they hafta use surface streets and typically share the road w/ traffic and can't preempt traffic signalization and this all makes them slow and impossible to accurately or consistently schedule

long haul buses are more ok tho

agreed but if ur dealing with a local govt as incompetent as useless as chicago you can get a bus line to cover a poor neighborhood much more easily than getting proper subways and trains running through. id rather we have a proper radial beltway train system but given how much worse it could be ill take it

its best use case is as a "bus bridge" stopgap measure in situations like when you've gotta do critical repairs to other, better systems

but yea long term it's just the barest of bare minimum service for poor folks

i helped design part of the new orleans streetcar system and that section of the expansion is gonna be excellent for getting tourists from the bed and breakfasts in the marigny and bywater over to the downtown area w/o makin them walk thru the treme ghetto or the sketchier parts of the quarter

it's just the oldest historically black neighborhood in the city and has the lafitte projects inside of it

since it borders the quarter there's just a lotta tourist muggings but i used to park my car there at night when i'd visit friends that live on the edge

but no it's not gentrifying like other nearby areas are, at least not yet

at least text-to-speech is bound by a neutral tone

edit: and to make it even worse, not even the poor idiots who ride bus/subway can escape the terror of the commuter rail narrator. the deafening station announcements are done by the same guy. also fyi when it's an interstate it's not up to the state DOT to decide anything since those are federal roads

and guess how the federal government decided that they're designated

it's not really law - the decisions are made by the AASHTO committees who are responsible for the interstate numbering system (they've been phasing out directionally suffixed routes for years)

reminder that adding 1 lane of highway in semiurban areas (without reconstructing any bridges or intersections) cost upwards of $8 million a mile, not counting any maintenance, and serves roughly the same number of cars. also highways, you know, fill up again and make traffic worse

basically the best way to invest in transportation of any kind is to have already done in 60 years ago

p much tho i'd estimate at closer to 10 or 11 based on right of way acquisitions nowadays (more where even the nowhere land is expensive like california)

and interchanges (ramps) and bridges are hellishly expensive all by themselves which can easily dwarf the rest of the project's cost just for rehabbing or replacing one or two "minor" ones
