FactsAreUseless posted:It's hard to say what Kojima's style is, because he does so little that isn't MGS. We know what the MGS style is, but that just means Kojima has tried to be consistent within the series. With the Death Stranding trailer, we can expand that to "very film-inspired" but that's about it. mechanically, he's all about interactions and systems, and he's very tongue-in-cheek about it all. cigars and cigarettes used to be joke items that had a hidden utility until he repurposed them in V as a way to pass time. boxes were another joke item that were still useful to hide in plain sight and he managed to come up with new ways to have the player and the game world interact with them. it's why bird poo poo on the big shell can cause you to trip if you run over it and why getting a wolf to piss on a cardboard box in a cave will prevent future wolf attacks in mgs1. death stranding looks like it's gonna be really somber in tone, but i can't help thinking he's gonna take the piss out of his own stuff again like he usually does.

the best joke was in mgs4 when you're returning to the part where you have to switch discs and otacon calls you up to brag about how great Blu Rays are for being dual layer.

my other favorite bit was the sorrow waving a sign with the radio frequency to help you advance the plot in a cutscene.

Scrub-Niggurath posted:I think the thing that stuck with me the most about MGSV didn't have to do with the plot or any of the cutscenes, it was that I could finally roll over while prone and shoot at people above/behind me you could flip over and aim in 4, but the controls were a lot clunkier compared to V. there's a video showing all the different cqc maneuver you could do in 4 and it's amazing how much thought they put into a fighting system that people might not even use since there's so many guns in the game.

I like V for its streamlined controls and how Kojima really thought about the staple items in Metal Gear and how they could be repurposed. I'm impressed with how ambitious 4 was in trying to tie off every possible dangling plot thread in the series, and how the change from one major area to several smaller locales showed the scale of the Patriots' influence. and playing MGS1 right before 4 got me in the right mood when I played Chapter 4.

Retarded_Clown_ posted:some segments where we switched to the real big boss wouldnt have hurt. maybe the twist couldve been revealed halfway and we could switch between big boss in setting up outer heaven in africa and venom creating distractions in Afghanistan. That way we could tangibly see the efforts big boss was putting into the base where one of the major points of the entire series took place. Plus its just that there was so much potential for filling out big boss story in africa in the 1980s because a lot of cool things happened there with him at that time. The fact that they skipped over all that stuff, while an interesting take, is ultimately a let down. For me at least. The gameplay is great but without a really good story connecting it all it starts to feel repetitive. this would make a cool memento style twist. where you assume snake without the horn is before the accident and snake with the horn is after, but the twist reveals itself when venom snake plays the man who sold the world tape.

An MGS movie wouldn't have enough time to show off all the FOXHOUND agents and give them enough character other than just one off personalities. It wouldn't really affect Vulcan Raven other than them cutting off the talk about Alaskan Ear Pulling. Also I think it'd be written so dead on straight and miss out on the fourth wall bs the games like to poke fun at.

Like best thing I can think of is making the codec exchanges voiceovers over montages of snake and FOXHOUND doing poo poo but there will definitely be people lost in the adaptation, like Nastasha and Decoy. Mantis would stay bc he's integral to the first game's experience but the control fuckery would change to some generic mind trip poo poo and harsh close ups in Dutch angles.
