Depends on the terms of the agreement and the personality/neuroses of the three people involved, but yeah personally I see no reason why a closed system consisting of three people instead of two couldn't work just fine as long as everyone involved is fully on board and nobody gets squeezed out as opposed to that guy whose wife stopped loving him in favor of repeatedly loving her ex, and got him to keep paying rent for the both of them by telling him they were polyamorous now and he was oppressing her if he said otherwise
