I started calling my old Newfoundland "Palooka" because even as a puppy he looked like a big, dumb black bear. My mom was super pissed at me back then because she really wanted to name him Rocky, but all he'd answer to is Palooka after I started calling him that. He passed away in '14, unfortunately, but at least he had a good 13 year run in the country where he got to run free and swim in the river like an otter. He was also scared of thunder so during storms, he'd hurl himself on the couch to huddle against me and I'd always say, "do I have to tell you about the rabbits again, Lennie?" and calm him down. I really miss that dog.
