Hey new thread, I post old comics, lovingly culled from Google Newspaper scans (which is why the quality is at times, well, poo poo). These dates may be a year or two off, I haven't really kept track. I'm also including wiki links - which will give more detail for each strip then I ever could (or want to).

Rarebit Fiend (click for huge)
These are from scans given to me by another SA member - sorry, I forgot who, but thank you! This strip began in 1904, we're on about the 80th strip. By Windsor McCay.

Outbusts of Everett True
~1910. A thread favorite, I think. By Condo.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Outbursts_of_Everett_True

Fritzi Ritz
~1938. This strip began with Fritzi (Nancy's Aunt) as the star, but eventually put Nancy front and center. I think someone is already posting old Nancy strips, so when the newspaper changes the name of the strip to "Nancy" I'll stop posting this one. I'll look for a new/old strip to post - suggestions welcome!

Sick, Sick, Sick (click for big)
~1958. An oddity from the Village Voice by satirist Jules Feiffer.

(yep, I have the whole thing - coming soon)

Wee Pals
~1971. Thread favorite and former thread title inspiration by Morrie Turner.

I felt obligated to look this up - the Sick, Sick Sick ran on December 31, 1958.

Here's the Mary Worth storyline, starting December 2, 1958. Sorry for the image dump, and forgive the quality, some were vertical, some horizontal, and I did my best. Also, some dates are missing. Mary did her meddling duty, but that strike in NYC must have sucked.

I'm adding a new strip, in anticipation of Fritzi Ritz going all "Nancy" on me. I wanted something similar in tone, so I chose Matt Groening's "Life In Hell". Ages ago, I posted this strip as scans from a compilation book, but I wanted a newspaper source that would give as many strips as possible.

Life in Hell utilizes what Groening has referred to as "squint-o-vision," referring to tiny text, so apologizes for anything not legible.

wikipedia posted:

The strip featured anthropomorphic rabbits and a gay couple. Groening used these characters to explore a wide range of topics about love, sex, work, and death. His drawings were full of expressions of angst, social alienation, self-loathing, and fear of inevitable doom.
I think Groening owes quite a bit to Jules Feiffer.

Groening eventually went on to dabble in animated television comedies, none of which was successful.

The strip was published from 1977 to 2012 - my search picked up the strip in publication "The News," where it started running mid-1990. They even ran ads to promote it!

It was an instant hit with their sophisticated, urbane readers.

I think it's important to know that Pluggers was originally by Jeff MacNelly, and when he was writing it it had a bit more edge. MacNelly mostly did editorial cartoons and won several Pulitzers and a Reuben, so there's your frame of reference. Brookins has taken that edge away, in my view.

You're wonderful. You really are.

I'm posting it. It's fun. Gladys grew up a few miles from where I did, and had quite a career:

wiki posted:

After drawing the flapper strip Gay and Her Gang in 1928-29, she took over Ethel Hays' Flapper Fanny Says panel, which she did for NEA from 1930 to 1936. She also did a comic strip series for Lux Soap during the 1930s.

During World War II, Parker created the strip Betty G.I. for the Women's Army Corps, and she also stepped in to draw Russell Keaton's Flyin' Jenny from 1942 until 1944 when his assistant Marc Swayze took over.

Under the name Gladys Parker Designs, her clothing line was sold in stores as early as 1934, capitalizing on her fame as the artist of Flapper Fanny Says. Parker also designed for films, such as her 1940 white sharkskin suit worn by actress Louise Platt. Living in Hollywood with her two black cats, Parker also wrote a daily column, "Dear Gals and Guys", during the 1960s.

From wikipedia: "The lyrics are brief and are dominated by the repetition of the title words and the nonsense refrain, "floy-doy, floy-doy, floy-doy". The original lyric, recorded in January 1938, was "flat foot floozie with a floy floy"; Vocalion, however, objected to the word "floozie",[3] meaning a sexually promiscuous woman, or a prostitute. The second recording in February changed the word to "floogie". In the second part of the title phrase, "floy floy" was slang for a venereal disease, but the term was not widely known and failed to catch the attention of censors.[8] It was regarded as nonsense and came to have positive connotations as a consequence of the song.[9]"

About the constant gas masks in these strips - during the first Gulf War you saw soldiers and, at times, reporters, with gas masks quickly placed on. There was a fear of a chemical attack from Saddam Hussein.

If you were watching then (and, well, had been born at that time), it wasn't uncommon to see CNN reporters in the field - I think Peter Arnett - quickly put one on when the sirens went off in Baghdad.

Aaaand with this strip, Life in Hell disappeared from The News (Boca Raton) for three months. I honestly thought they had dropped it for good, and that would have sucked as I don't see any other sources, but it picks back up after the strips turn less political.
