I think the freeze'm out method is 100% correct and I hope they stick with it, I'm upset that this courtesy isn't extended to all people but that doesn't change this, and I really hope this begins an uptick of the right wing yahoos being monitored and taken down because I work on a college campus and it ain't jihadist who shoot those up Even if you give into their demands they'll run off and shoot people (Vegas shootings) so what's the point in taking anything they say seriously? Nothing in except boxes of swamp water from the internet, nothing out until they kneel and kiss a portrait of Obama. Probably some nutjob will get fed up and start shooting other militiamen who start talking about giving themselves up and then poo poo will get way out of hand

chitoryu12 posted:Sovereign citizens are descendent of Posse Comitatus, an extreme right-wing tax protester movement of the 70s and 80s. They had a really bizarre reading of the laws that somehow managed to interpret that sheriffs are the head of state and that government has no authority above the county level (I think something to do with the legal concept of posse comitatus, which is what lets the sheriff legally recruit citizens to help him enforce the law at his own discretion; I guess they interpreted that power and discretion as giving the sheriff total authority). A lot of modern sovereign citizens include this in their ridiculousness, believing that an elected sheriff is the highest authority and refusing to recognize any greater level of government (such as the state and federal government) as legitimate. So if all power above the county level is disbanded, what happens to this enormous juggernaut of a military? Are they assuming they'll just quietly disband and not, for example and I'm totally just thinking out loud because something like this has never happened before, steamroll every paintball playdate militia guarding anything even remotely valuable and set up a military junta by day 2? edit - maybe they read Starship Troopers and took the hand waving of "look, this military needs to be benevolent if I'm going to be able to tell this story I don't care if it doesn't make sense" to heart Epic High Five fucked around with this message at 12:04 on Jan 15, 2016 |

The right loves them some national security legislation and spending, so gutting the FBI would run counter to that, especially if it resulted in an attack that democrats can frame as preventable had the FBI had the budget. It's a good argument but funding has already been cut to the FBI for responding to right wing christian terrorism, so it's actually more or less a stone cold fact that it would happen. They'll still spend big, just not on the FBI, like what congress did with the CDC and gun violence research

But at a time when GOP optics couldn't be that much worse, attempting something like that could be another nail in the coffin for the party. They'll just say it was transgender abortionists and their base will eat it up and the media will say, "well all the evidence says that the killer was a right wing militia member and also that member says it and their browser history and all their affiliations and all their friends and also it's on camera, but this expert from Mormon Shill University says that can't possibly be true. I really loving feel for those kids because I know what it's like to be surrounded by a bunch of fatalistic as a kid and not be able to do anything about it but hope for the best. It is such a jelpless, confused feeling. I'd sooner see every adult seditionist die in a hail of bullets than see any harm come to those kids. Which isn't outside of the realm of possibility considering Michigan's history with militias. You'd better tell them to disperse the security, if they try to stop the patriots from marching in and doing whatever they want, there may be another Waco!

I'm guessing a conflict will begin with either the watch tower shooting at approaching cops unless the police shoot first. I assume part of the warning was getting police snipers trained on that tower and saying, "and if we see you make a move to raise your rifle we shoot" The thing about being in a fire tower is that while you do have a great view of the surrounding land, you're also a hugely obvious target whose escape route is extremely unsecure
