Ok, guess I'll prepare for a hell of a ride, but at least the historical clothing will be cool, and maybe they'll be a subplot about the protag's Trabant breaking down.

Not to say this isn't a dumb show, but the conversation outdoors made it clear she was bullshitting in order to survive unfamiliar and hostile territory. The protagonist ranting at her about how horrible the country really was let her know she could trust him with the real reason she was in the GDR. The clumsy, idealistic ingenue was a mask, and we see her take it off in that long pause when she had her back turned to him.

A bunch of freakshow monster bugs invading the world might make it easier for them to accept religion, if only to allow people to scream "JESUS CHRIST!" more often.

That might just be my western worldview talking, though.

Also, they've been mauled to the point where most men of fighting age have been killed off and they're throwing everyone up to and including screechy PTSD head-cases onto the front lines just so they have extra guns. Dictatorships' laws are porous at the best of times, designed more to regulate and exploit than ban certain behaviours, and the dire situation the GDR is in here makes it pretty likely that someone would go 'yeah, she's useful, and we can always bring the hammer down on her for displaying that Christian crap if she does something we don't like'.

That's way more thought than the creators of an anime that includes this screenshot have likely put into their setting, but it's still within the realm of plausibility.

Military outcomes are the army's problem. If it further reinforces that the Stasi are above everyone else and can get away with anything, that's all that matters.

Also, to adopt a insane Stasi perspective, they're thinking long-term. If an elite unit has been compromised by a West German infiltrator, they need to obliterate it fast before the sedition spreads and cripples their war effort against the BETA. They're taking a significant loss now to avert a gigantic loss down the line.

Maybe the whole thing is a long con and the MC is the real traitor.

That would be a deeply silly and unnecessarily grimdark twist.

In the context of this show, I'm all for it.

It'd be dumb to extrapolate from a particular niche art-form to the entirety of a country's culture. On the other hand, it seems reasonable to note that a fair amount of adult-geared anime is pitched towards a weird, insular otaku community that compensates for its lack of size with astonishingly deep pockets, and that catering to this niche audience involves playing to an unusual number of strange fetishes, including incest, that may have some small, distorted roots in broader Japanese culture (like how a low birth rate means less odds of having a sibling, so otaku weirdos are more likely to fetishise sisters they've never had).

It's very much like the bizarre poo poo we've seen in Western superhero comics with the aging and shrinking of their demographics. It's easy to compare the more unpleasant excesses of late-night anime to stuff like Ultimatum or Mark Millar's nastier outpourings, even if their particular audiences may be more or less tolerant of particular forms of hideousness.

I'm shocked to state that this week's episode was 100% not poo poo or gross. Hooray!

P.S. Would anyone be interested in a few effortposts on stuff that pops up in the show vs. their real world counterparts?

Good posts in a thread about a not-very-good show? I'd dig it.

yeah the only weird part about this show is that honestly it might have been better served without the doom aliens

they're obliterating the world but seem like a tertiary antagonist in this show and honestly they seem weird and out of place even though the franchise revolves around what jerks they are

you've got a decently strong story about cold war lingering politics fought with giant robots, and Lise's whole arc was at least a somewhat satisfying way to show how hosed up everything is and to give our hero a big motivation to upend the status quo that ruined his sister and forced him to kill her! but then every so often there's these laser scrotums people make a huge deal about and then they're totally forgotten for another four episodes

Does kind of bring an extra urgency to the political machinations, though. As in, on the one hand, the system is terrible. On the other, if it doesn't hold together to some degree, everyone dies. I would honestly not be surprised by some grimdark ending where by taking down the Stasi elite and their fancy Russian mechs, our heroes cripple East Germany's military and let the BETA swarm in and eat everyone. Axmann going 'gently caress it, burn the world' with his massive weapons stockpile may or may not factor into this.

It's 1964. You are Walter Ulbricht, the chancellor of the GDR and you want to proclaim the power and modernity of your Soviet Puppet state. The years of rebuilding since 1945 have been pretty harsh, but now your state is beggining to prosper and has a reputation for high quality engineering and goods among the other Warsaw Pact states. But you'd really like it if you can advertise your power to those jerks in West Berlin, an enclave of capitalists and NATO forces in the heart of your State, just sitting there and occupying 3/4 of your capital city.

Meanwhile, a fancy rear end TV tower has been built in Stutgart, a wealthy city of West Germany. Can't be outdone. Hire the flower of German engineering and design something grandiose and amazing to outdo those stupid Westerners. A TV tower to rival the huge ones that the Soviets built in Moscow, Kiev and Riga. Heck, why not add a revolving restaurant and a visitor platform over a mirrored sphere. A true monument to German style Socialism.

Except that apparently your Engineers are encountering significant difficulties with the advanced design and the stresses it must handle. poo poo. Hire some neutral Swedish Engineering consultants to fix everything. They won't blab. Probably?

Ok. The tower is built and inaugurated. A glorious day in East Berlin. The sun decides to poke out from the usual gray sky and illuminate your monument to the commnon man.
Wait, why is the light causing a cross shaped aura around the ball? gently caress. Have the Stasi talk with those loving engineers, what did you mean no one expected this?

I appreciate this post, and wish to see more.

I think a good Muv Luv TV show might be a pseudo documentarian story that talks about the BETA invasion in it's entirety, starting on Mars, and ending in Japan in 2001 when whatsisface shows up at the beginning of Alternative. But that's probably too dry to ever get actually made

A TV show in the style of World War Z, maybe?
