It's amazing how tame the old "impossible" coin seems compared to the mystery goomba and now this new one:

After all those recent videos about improving the goomba stairs strategy he just goes and bypasses it entirely:

did make me wonder why you cant just clone every star lol

That level he cloned the star in is basically the only one you can do it because it's the only place where there is a loading zone you can carry objects through. Since you can only clone an object as it loads, most stars in the game aren't cloneable because they are always loaded or only load when you complete the objective that spawns them.

However the real cool part of this video is that he also included an imgur album of his work to plan out the new route:

Isn't the VPU and wall snapping stuff new (to his videos, at least)? There were a bunch of stars a few years ago where all the pieces were sitting in videos without anything putting them together but I don't remember those pieces being anywhere

I mean they're not new in the sense that in his end of year video from a couple months back, these were already at 0 a presses, so they haven't removed any since that video. The 120 star run is still at 28 A presses. But you're right that he hasn't officially documented these stars using these methods until now.

Pannen talks about a hypothetical future "final run." Does this imply that at a certain point they'll give up on the remaining A-presses, or will it not be a "final run" until every single A-press is removed at some far future date?

A final run would either be 0 A-presses or proof that no more can be saved. But since they keep finding new tricks it's hard to imagine how the latter situation could come about.

I think what's so great about this particular video is pannen made videos about both of the big new tricks years ago as possibilities that couldn't be figured out at the time. But they never give up on anything and people finally found out how to make both of them feasible. It's such an awesome combination of so many different pieces of information compiled and experimented on over several years.

I love this project

One difficulty of this new strat was that it requires the rotating hand to rotate counterclockwise about 114 degrees. This is very abnormal behavior for the hand, as its behavior in code has it favor rotating clockwise. Thus, I wrote a program to simulate TTC and find the next time the hand would perform this feat. It usually took the hand somewhere between 10 and 40 days before it did it. However, I then wrote a program to simulate making dust on various frames, and to look ahead in each of these cases to see how long it would be until the hand did what we wanted. This method found dozens of quick solutions (some of which were too fast to be usable, since I wouldn't have enough time to build up speed). Thus, I chose the fastest one that left enough time for speed building, and proceeded with that one. If you're curious, here were the results of my program after running it for ~20 hours: https://pastebin.com/raw/CrJZZVpn. This shows what frames to make dust on, and what frame the hand would start its 114 degree counterclockwise movement after such dust.

It's been a while but he's done it again:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kfkiH51AA8

We're down to 19 A presses now, I can hardly believe it.

Most exciting to me though is that this one was saved by figuring out how to perform spawning displacement on yet another star in Tic Toc Clock, on one that he previously thought was impossible. See this video for a refresher:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0vJAD0UCIY

He managed to get inside the wall and raise the pendulum up high enough so that he could do the kick thing off the wall, collect the star, and land on the spinner below to spawn on the ledge.

Or something like that

quote:

Once the pendulum swings into position, I kick the wall, line up just right to get 10 wall displacements at once, brush up against the hand to adjust Mario's position, and then ledge grab onto the lowest spinner.
