quote:

When Bernie Sanders released his universal health care plan last week, promising that most people would receive more generous insurance coverage while paying less for medical care, most policy experts said it sounded too good to be true.

Now, a veteran health economist has produced a more serious assessment of Sanders' proposal and concluded that the critics were right.

According to analysis from Emory University professor Kenneth Thorpe, a former Clinton administration advisor who has also done paid work for health industry clients, Sanders has wildly underestimated the cost of providing such comprehensive benefits to all Americans. Either his plan would blow a giant hole in the deficit, Thorpe predicts, or the new payroll and income taxes to finance the proposal would be more than twice as high as the Sanders campaign has projected.

Either way, Thorpe says, the Sanders plan would create both winners and losers, as any health reform proposal would. The winners would include workers for whom the new taxes would still be less than what they pay now, in premiums and out-of-pocket costs combined. The losers would include some Medicaid recipients with jobs, because their employers would pass along the expense of new payroll taxes as lower wages.

i think the german/irish/italian/etc-identifying americans arrived in the 19th century, while the american-identifying area was settled by southerners, the descendents of british/irish who mostly arrived in the 18th century, and didn't see much impact from the big ellis island-style migration. the extra century-plus in-country results in lower relevance for the origin-based identity

there might be something about a 'dixie' culture subsuming origin-based identity, in which case you'd have a tie to slavery and racism, since it's possible that northern 18th-century immigrants held onto their identities more strongly than southern 18th-century immigrants, but it's not strictly necessary to explain the data. we'd need to factor out post-1860 or so immigrants to get a good comparison and that would be hard to do

The South didn't attract much immigrants which is another reason why it lost the Civil War against the more industrialized higher population north.

Don't give 'em an inch. Obama set a precedent for assassinating American citizens abroad, and now Donald J. Trump has inherited that power. Obama refused to prosecute war crimes and torture, and now Trump is going to bring it all back 10 fold. Obama wouldn't side with Labor in any of its struggles after he promised to be on that picket line, and now there might not even be an NLRB - and the AFL-CIO is bending their knee to Trump.

Obama hosed us all hard.

Bernie was alway at the picket line supporting organized labor.

Where were the Hillary and Obama?

Are you not from the US or did you somehow miss that every man in the US is required to register for the draft, and at this point most states automatically register you when you get an ID of any kind?

I'm trying to understand if you're justifiably ignorant or just normal ignorant.
