Also, now that you mention SAO. The original translation (after patch) was entirely usable, and mainly bad due to being awkward and having bad grammar/orthography. However the retranslation also sucks, because, while it may have perfect grammar/orthography, it changed the characters from "bunch of ordinary people stuck in a J-MMO" to "actual hardcore LARPers larping it up in the middle ages".

Just as there's many ways to cook a chicken, there's many ways to get a translation wrong, even when done with the best intentions.

Wasn't SAO's original translation basically machine-done with a little editing here and there? It seems like anything could be an improvement to that.

I know that ImpAtom or someone is going to point out that with a little word switcheroo, you could say the same thing about SK, and this is true, but it's possible D_T might actually be growing and developing finer tastes. Maybe. Hopefully.

Burst improved the basic beat em up formula with the addition of the aerial raves and generally set a solid foundation to develop further the concept. Deep Crimson took those very same foundations and the few things that worked from Versus and built a pretty solid gameplay that stood out between the genre.

You're absolutely correct about the Versus series though. Just shallow and mediocre games that waste the potential the 3DS game showed.

I really wanted to like the 3DS game because the aerials were fun but the anemic framerate killed it for me.

Maybe I should've clarified; the ports are incredibly faithful with upscales. The games themselves aren't HD-upgraded, but everything else has been improved greatly, and there's the inclusion of online play mechanics (that apparently worked really well). My mistake on the HD visual problem.

I do think, though, that people's perception of the "popularity" of DS is greatly exaggerated.

I didn't know anyone in the fighting game scene who was super into it. Like, Morrigan is sort of iconic at this point but that's about it.

That's the point though. XCOM does not have much downtime. It is on fact optimized to minimize downtime to increase demographic appeal.

As for fighting the monsters, yes, it's supposed to feel like a slog at the start and when you stumble over a new challenging element. It's your job to figure out how to make it not one.

Edit: Tried helldivers yet?

XCOM2 has a lot of "downtime" but that's because they somewhat increased base management stuff. It actually strikes a good balance.

My issue with MH initially was that it had a super slow start in terms of getting to the actual monster hunting and the controls were so stiff and it felt like I should be able to target lock monsters. Eventually I got through the slow start and realized the control jank was actually part of the appeal. I never really enjoyed the multiplayer though because it was too chaotic, better-playing or better-equipped players seemed to trivialize battles, and I liked the intensity of fighting a big dangerous monster 1v1.

While I love the Vita, there are so many things wrong with it that happened before it even got released. 3G, overly expensive and necessary proprietary memory cards, a back-touch panel that sounded appealing until you used it for more than 15 seconds, a lack of support for backwards compatibility for several months after release, and a high price point that reflected or worsened all of these problems basically conspired to keep the Vita from being a success. It needed a 2.0 revision that dropped all the bullshit and let the thing use microSD memory and Sony seemed quite intent on not ever letting that happen.

I think part of the reason the 3DS has bottomed out quicker than previous Nintendo handhelds is actually graphics fidelity. I knew more than a few people who saw the "New 3DS" and were disappointed that it had the exact same anemic screen resolution. Even if you feel that graphics aren't very important (and I'd agree), the 3DS screens look archaic when compared to even a free crappy Android you'd get when signing up for a mobile plan and that's sort of disappointing. It becomes even more of a problem when it makes small text actually hard to read in some RPG's.

Their situation is not great and it kind of sucks since they did bankroll quite a few good games during the 360 and now they're not nearly as eager to.

The NX does need power on par with or better than the PS4 to make developers take notice and offer a decent value proposition to users but it doesn't need to be a PS3-like powerhouse sold at a loss since they of all people don't need to do cutting edge.

More important (and worrying) is it needs a decent UI out of the gate, it needs to connect well with the current estore and support at least limited BC since the WiiU ran short, it needs a more robust digital distribution platform than Nintendo is currently fielding, and it needs some actually decent third party support if Nintendo wants to compete directly with Sony. Nintendo has a tough road ahead.

"We don't mean to give you the impression that we feel that the Vita market is weak or anything; by no means do we want to make it seem like it's any sort of inferior platform. I would never for example say that the Vita is a dead console that its manufacturer barely supports. Well, Jack's not wrong. Sony did do a good job of killing the Vita from the get-go, but mobile gaming undoubtedly played a significant role as well.

Then again, I never was into mobile games, myself, but I still wrote off the Vita from the start—and it was the proprietary memory that made it a non-starter for me. Such a painfully shortsighted design decision.

I eventually did end up getting one to try out RemotePlay, but by then, my one secondhand hardware sale had zero effect on the Vita's market position.

You also missed out on the bizarre inclusion of 3G support that didn't work with multiplayer and people questioned the moment it was announced.
