Is there a way to pick which continent you start on, like in XCOM 1? I started over after I completed the ADVENT Blacksite in a way that was basically catastrophic because the tutorial kinda rushes you into there if you listen to its instructions, and now my base is in the Arctic :v:

Search the Steam Workshop for Set HQ Location. I don't always use it since I kind of like the rng aspect, but sometimes I just want to play a game starting from someplace specific and this always works fine.

I give my early game specialists stocks. Between stocks and combat protocol, they get at least a couple kills a mission and have made enough clutch, hard to reach kills that I hate not bringing one.

Has anyone had any issues where sitreps don't always trigger? Every now and then I'll get a sitrep, usually a plain old lost sitrep, and get onto the map and it's just a regular encounter. I figure it might be a mod problem, but with this game you never know. They usually work, just every now and then they don't.

It was weird because it started to beat the poo poo out of everyone before I had even broken concealment. Literally turn one and it just goes nuts.

Maybe they're considered activated on Defend the Device missions to allow them to attack the device. Sure beats the old "mission fail on turn one" situation Protect the Device can produce. Sectopods!!! :argh:

I've heard that a good chunk of the rewards come from the first crate you mark. I don't know if that is true but I usually just mark the easy ones while focussing on finding and killing pods. Even losing half the crates gives me a good haul.

A sharpshooter with a reaper can eliminate one Advent to open an encounter using squadsight. They are definitely not a side grade. SS should be pushing right alongside the rest of the squad. Even if they can't open an encounter their grenade and pistol make them great for cleaning up as long as you don't have them perched in the back.

A common thing I see in playthroughs is people having their SS trail behind and having to take low percentage shots because they are a "sniper". I keep them with the group, especially early, and find them useful. I play legend so a lot of shots will leave 1-2 hp and my pistol cleans up pretty reliably.

Going "what happens if i do this?", saving, giving it a shot and reloading if it goes horribly wrong is a great way to learn how the game works. I save scummed like crazy when I first started.

What's a good rule of thumb for what tech I should have by when (in vanilla)? I feel like I'm losing ground against the aliens, and I can't tell if it's because my gear isn't up to snuff or if I just need to get better at the tactical side of things.

I think you'll want mag weapons by the May? retaliation or you'll have problems with berserkers. Might be June I can't remember. Anyway other than resistance comms I just beeline mag and gauss weapons and don't really have problems staying ahead of the curve. The time at the end of ballistic weapons is probably the roughest of the game.

My favorite solution to alien rulers was to uninstall it and never look back.

I'm still clowning fools by that point. Don't miss any of the toys really. I just like the game better without it.

Only time I would restart because of a squad wipe would be gatecrasher. The toys you get with rank are nice but your weapon levels are the most important factor. Push weapon techs and learn to play safer and you can recover even a bad wipe.

Are your mods for regular XCom2 or War of the Chosen and are you launching that version of the game? They are treated as separate games with separate mod lists and character pools.

I usually run the game through the XCOM Alternative Mod Launcher, but launching the game through Steam it loaded a 2K launcher that had an option to manage mods on it.
