More meltdowns please. I don't know any young people in real life who were 'no' supporters, so laughing at /pol/ people is the best I'll get.

Ulster, on either side of the border, is always reliably nuts. If Roscommon gets much company in the dustbin of history in this referendum it'll probably be the Nordies.

irlZaphod posted:Probably only thanks to Gerrymandering. In the Marriage Equality referendum, it was a Roscommon-South Leitrim constituency. It was Galway-Roscommon this time. FG historically have been more socially conservative than Labour, but they've always been a lot less socially conservative party than FF. Their core support base has traditionally been a lot more middle class than FF. It was DeV and FF who were fully in bed with the Catholic Church. FG have always been too far to the right on economic issues, but their current Thatcherite neo-liberal views are an extreme even for them. Whenever Leo goes they might pivot back towards their more normal centre-right-ish economic views.

To be fair at least this way he'll get a ministerial position in the next government and actually be able to influence the country. Catherine Murphy does good investigative work but the Social Democrats aren't going to achieve anything lasting by refusing to ever go into government.

DepoProvera posted:Yes everyone should just join FF or FG No not at all. Smaller parties in Ireland have been proven to be able to have a very large influence while in government, ie the PDs or Greens. But the problem with the Social Democrats is they had the opportunity to go into this current government in 2016, when they could have extracted a prince's ransom from a desperate FG for their seats. But Shortall in particular was resolutely against it, preferring instead to play the "long game". Which given herself and Catherine Murphy are only likely to last one more election or so given their age is a very risky proposition. Its why I can see the merits of Donnelly's decision to leave, with the crux of his argument being "if you're not willing to go into government now, then when will you be?".

It'd be nice if we got into a tradition of a monumental piece of socially liberalising legislation/amendment being implemented every 3 years.

Decriminalising drugs would be great. But secularising schools and hospitals is probably a more important issue. Its ridiculous how involved the Catholic church is in both of these today.

Well that was fast: http://www.broadsheet.ie/2018/05/29/flings-duster/ quote:Co-leader Róisín Shortall TD said: Go the SocDems! It'll probably be ignored by FG, but we'll see.

A DUP TD probably wouldn't be that much worse than the Healy-Raes to be fair. Probably just as backward socially, but maybe slightly less corrupt.

irlZaphod posted:All our political parties are left compared to the US... This is true of most civilized countries, though. Ireland hasn't had a single left wing government since independence. Labours few years as minority coalition partner here or there have been as close as we've come, and thats pretty far off. Its pretty horrifying how conservatism has dominated the country for the past 90 years.

Its a shame all of these nutjobs/corrupt FFers/egomaniacs are coming out of the woodwork. The whole election is going to be a colossal waste of time and money. Presuming he wins hopefully Higgins doesn't die any time soon, that would trigger another election again then wouldn't it?

https://www.broadsheet.ie/2018/10/25/leader/ Casey leading in so many online polls is really odd. I really didn't think there were so many 4chan alt-right types in Ireland. Unless its yanks voting in all the polls, I guess. Hopefully they they'll enjoy going 0 for 2 after the abortion referendum and this.

On the one hand lol at Gallagher. Delighted he won't get his expenses back. On the other, Casey jumping from 2% to 21% when he decided to start Trumping it up is very worrying. There will be undoubtedly lots of very interested, unscrupulous people taking note of that...
