glynnenstein posted:I get that the truck drivers lose track of the dumper position and this poo poo happens, but I absolutely do not understand the people who see the truck driving down the road like that and almost/do rear-end the truck when it hits a bridge or something. People are so loving stupid/oblivious. I don't understand how everyone's reaction to seeing that isn't to get as far away from the truck as possible. The people video taping are always way too close do an inevitable disaster.

But casualty doesn't differentiate between the kind of injuries, no? Like, how do we know that 20 casualties isn't 1 person dead and 19 people with some scratches that need a bandaid and a kiss from their mothers. e: I'm not talking about the military. I'm referring something to a bit more civilian in a disaster scenario.

that was a dumb statement. I don't know what I'm trying to say I think I just wanted to talk about getting a kiss from mommy.

I was behind a truck pulling a trailer like that but there was nothing at all on it. Ohhh boy I kept a lot of distance from that thing. It was so light, it was bouncing around uncontrollably from every tiny bump into other lanes.

aphid_licker posted:The human body never ceases to amaze. I will forever be terrified of my own vascular system since I read a news item of a guy who was taking out his trash, randomly managed to nick the femoral with a broken wine bottle in the bag, and died. Apparently he panicked and opted to try to clean up the blood rather than apply pressure / call the ambulance etc. Poor sod. I completely agree. I'm amazed at the ability of the body to recover from truly traumatic things, but I'm also amazed at our ability to die of really stupid poo poo. This guy had had the angle grinder slip and it caught his pants. He didn't even feel it rip into his flesh. At first he was pissed that he ruined a perfectly good pair of pants before he looked closer. A person who I went to college with had a major rock climbing climbing accident and smashed his head. He spent almost a year in a medically induced coma. Eventually the doctors decided there was no hope so a decision was made to pull the plug. Once life support was turned off...he woke up, and eventually made a full recovery. Then, on the other hand, a family friend had a blood clot in his knee come lose, it moved to his heart and he just dropped dead in the middle of work. A different friend went septic and died from loving strep throat of all things. She was completely healthy otherwise and nobody has any idea as to why.

I realized one day that my biggest fear in life isn't death, but rather dying from something incredibly stupid. It's one of the reasons why I keep my distance from power tools. Anyone who knows me knows how incredibly clumsy I am.

My dad drove a train for 30 years, and he says that it's just a matter of time before you squish somebody. Two weeks after he retired, a trainee driving his old route had someone jump in front of the train and kill themselves.
