Enough up and you get to skip earth orbit and go straight to a solar orbit, but that's probably also enough energy to turn iron into iron vapor, so. In some alternate universe, the manhole cover leaves atmosphere, then turns back, in the meanwhile earth has rotated enough that the cover splashes on Kremlin killing Khruschev and igniting WW3.

PittTheElder posted:I love that that's easier than putting the wires in a big pipe. In urban centres the wires go underground but in the grand scale, over millions of kilometers of rural powerlines that would be totally impractical. Hence rural areas suffer power outs all the time during storms and blizzards while I have never personally experienced a power out in a city. Sure the cables can get cut by diggers, but it seldom affects many households and will be fixed briefly. In the rural areas a big storm can cut power from thousands of households and fixing the problem takes time but the lowly peasant accepts his lot.

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-41925943 "An Egyptian bridegroom has been seriously injured after he was hit by shotgun pellets fired by a guest celebrating his wedding. The groom suffered serious injuries to his testicles, thigh and hand and is being treated in hospital. Osman al-Alsaied, 28, was enjoying his last night being single when the weapon was accidentally fired at him rather than into the air. Police say the gun was negligently fired by a 26-year-old man. They say he fled soon after the incident but was later arrested and is now being questioned." It's not unusual to have one shot too many at a bachelor's party but at least they were having a ball.

Snow freezing on trees and causing them to fall on electric lines has recently caused a lot of trouble in Finland. Two weeks ago one bystander who was watching loggers clearing an electric line was badly burned when a cable fell on him. Today two woodcutters were injured badly in Riihimäki while working too closely to each other with clearing saws. When one of them cut a tree it fell on the other cutter who lost his balance and swung his saw toward the guy who felled the tree on him, who in turn swung his saw at the other guy. According to reporting all of this was accidental.

Canada doesn't make it into the top 11 on wikipedia for tunnels, despite us having several Norways worth of mountainous area. Most of Canada's population does not live in the mountainous area, whereas Norwegians live in fjords and to connect them by land is tricky.
