When he sees his shadow, he is filled with joy and a feeling of mastery. "There I am" he would say.  Ovoid loved to look at his shadow, and marveled at it's excellence. He loved his features, unblemished, complete. He could only see one side of his shadow but he could easily infer that he was a fine Ovoid, without edge or breaks or edges.  It never occurred to Ovoid that he was anything but identical with his shadow, which occasionally led to some unnecessary fear. Once a spider crept towards his shadow, leading to quite a spooky sensation.  One day Ovoid was visited by his friend, Torus. Torus was a peculiar fellow, but Ovoid liked him just the same.  Ovoid liked that Torus was shaped just like him, that made it easy to get along, he would often think to himself. One day, however, Torus showed Ovoid a trick that changed Ovoid's life forever. Ovoid watched on the wall as Torus began to stretch. "I can't see myself as I do this Ovoid, so you'll have to let me know when it works". Ovoid watched in amazement as Torus's dark uniform body became less elliptical and more circular, and then suddenly it happened:  Right in the center of Torus, a hole opened up, and light began to shine through him! Ovoid gasped, "Are you okay?! it seems someone poked a hole in you!"  Torus only laughed, "Don't worry Ovoid, you may be seeing light pass through but I can assure you that there is no hole in the surface of my body. I am completely solid, just like you are. In fact, topologically speaking my torus shape is no different from your ovoid. Ovoid was shocked, "Are you saying that an Ovoid and a Torus are the same shape?" Torus said, "Not exactly, my friend. The surface of both shapes is the same, they're just structured a little differently, but that difference can be yooge!" Ovoid asked "How so?"  "Well for one thing, if we tried to place some ovoids together, they naturally don't take to it. They tend to bounce off one another, there's a lot of conflict, you know? We could stack them on top of each other, but they often fall down. A pyramid shape is a great way to keep them stacked together, but then it turns out the ones on the bottom have conflict with the ones on the top. It seems that hard surface you're so proud of makes it tough to get together without breaks, holes, penetrations, or other uncomfortable things.  My torus friends, however, are able to do something that ovoids cannot: they can link together. This structure allows them to form a chain, where they support and strengthen each other, without breaking or penetrating each other's surfaces, and without the ugly hierarchy that comes from stacking. "  "That's astonishing" Ovoid said, "I wish I was a Torus" But Ovoid, said Torus, you are a Torus! You've just spent so long staring at your shadow that you've forgotten it! I could show you what I mean, but it would require a little change in perspective, we would have to go......outside....  "Outside?" Ovoid asked, how do we get there? "Well," Torus said, "we're going to have to pass through....the Fourth Wall"
