This is basically the same formula as FC3 & 4, just without guns. It's still a lot of fun imo.

And without a good main nemesis and story line, which makes it all the worse for wear. Luckily if I want a Far Cry fix, I still need to play through Far Cry 4 sitting on my PS4.

this game is actually great if you turn off every part of the interface and just kind of run around in the forest at random and see what happens. the game does feel more "fluid" in a sense than the others in the series because its real easy to forget any pretense of story or broader main quest, you can just let the hunt take you where it takes you and that in itself is a pretty cool gaming experience, imo and doing that works far better than in the previous titles because it actually makes a lot of sense given the game's setting

that said, there is a lot to hate about it especially if you try to get into the story missions and do the whole outpost-conquering thing in the standard ubisoft way, because in many respects this is even more of a lazy copy-paste job than the previous ones.

also the fire mechanic from FC2 is back, and much improved.

Protip: Go to options, and turn off gathering animations. You'll save a lot of time in the long run, considering how much gathering you're going to do.

First Impressions: Game is packed with content, the world looks great. It's too early for me to say if the different theme, and melee combat is going to hurt the game, but so far I can tell i'm going to sink just as much time into this as FC4. I never gave a crap about multiplayer, but I was bummed that they left out co-op too.

I got the Uplay ones but I also have plain stone ones. Should be able to check the crafting screen to see how to unlock them. I can't remember when I did.

on xbox one the game world is quite beautiful close up, but the landscape seen from a distance is generally ugly, surprisingly much more so than FC3 or 4, and the surface of large bodies of water seen from a distance is terrible, looks like something from two console generations ago. Which is odd because it's almost exactly the same kind of landscape as FC4, which I don't remember looking so bad.

How's the stealth in this game? I had tons of fun basically loving with the AI and becoming an invisible silent killer in FC3 with nothing but a rock and my machete, but the AI in FC4 was hyper-aware and I had a lot less fun attempting the same approach.

I've only played an hour or two but so far it seems like stealth is pretty doable when you're going for outposts or just out in the world. Seems like enemies have to be staring straight at you and if you're starting to get spotted you can usually slink away. Since this is an Ubisoft game they have to make sure you can't always use your preferred play style, so some missions will just throw waves of enemies at you that you're not likely to stealth your way around.

I'm not liking how there seem to be a lot of escort and settlement defense missions in this. Once my allies get involved in the skirmish I find it difficult to tell them apart from the enemies.

its pretty good, you can definitely get the drop on enemies/animals and can also use certain tamed animals to do stealth kills. you also have the ability to scope out areas with the owl which seems to be undetectable by enemies. also the AI has gotten better at being stealthy, hiding in bushes etc

if anything it's gone a bit too far in the other direction, as you can use the owl to assassinate any enemy without alerting anyone to your position, so if you want you can just sit in the bushes somewhere and take out everyone in an outpost one by one

That just makes owls the 10,000 B.C. version of sniper rifles.

sniper rifles could still trigger alarms and get you spotted in the older games, so far that doesn't seem to happen with the owl

In the preview and review videos that have shown the map, it looks really, realllly similar to the FC4 map. Did they really use the same basic layout for this game, or is it all new and fresh and different map and locations?

I like how whole skill trees are locked behind getting actual trainers back at your base and building a home for them. In fact I like the population mechanic in general, it's neato. Unlike in previous Far Cries I feel like all the poo poo I'm collecting is being put to use.

Especially since you can indeed burn through resources quickly if you get in the habit of lighting weapons on fire or throwing weapons around.

Also once you can ride sabertooth tigers you can get around town FAAAAST. Hahahha.

It doesn't really "feel" like FarCry 4 but I can see the similarities. Cold mountainous north but also an as yet unexplored swamp in the south.

I also like how crafting makes more sense as a caveman. As Ajay or whatshisname in 3 they may have been all guerilla warfare but they still had access to civilization to some extent. Just but a bigger bag instead of skinning 4 rare mongooses.

I can see the complaints about the story though. I defeated the leader of the cannibal tribe pretty easily and without much fanfare but now when I'm going after the "Sun Goddess" there seems to be a much bigger plot and more engagements, but unless there's a third tribe on top of that? I don't know...

Still a lot of fun, having a great time riding my Sabretooth around and just taking it all in. Not seen any problems with the graphics myself, it looks gorgeous.

It's the same type of terrain but arranged a bit differently and with more kinds of trees added in.

Basically it doesn't feel like an entirley new sequel but more a heavily reskinned/remade version of FC4 in the same way that Blood Dragon was for FC3. But the gameplay is different enough that it's still cool.

Blind Rasputin posted:

I dunno, a lot of the reviews say the story and characters are a bit bland. Unlike previous far cry games, the protagonist and antagonist in this one aren't awesome and off their rocker nuts. There is apparently not that many memorable moments. No equivalent to burning weed fields or going berserk in an opium factory. Some have also said that at the end of the day, you're either using a bow, spear, or club. There just isn't much true variety.

I hate to be "that guy," but this kinda makes me more excited for the game, not less. Vaas and Pagan Min (especially Pagan; I always like it when Troy Baker gets to stretch and he obviously had a blast) were fun and all, but neither of them really seemed to do anything in the story or world except do their bit and bow out, and lately it's seemed that they and other wacky characters and moments were put in not because they belonged there, but to fulfill the "be kooky" box on the checklist. In FC3 most of these moments made sense, as they reflected Jason's descent into drug use and insanity, but they felt really tacked on in FC4. So I'm kinda glad they seem to be grounding it a little more in not reality, but tone.
