The Infinite Jukebox is a very cool web site created during an MIT hackathon.

The FAQ explains it best:

quote:

  • What is this? - For when your favorite song just isn't long enough. This web app lets you upload a favorite MP3 and will then generate a never-ending and ever changing version of the song. It does what Infinite Gangnam Style did but for any song.
  • It never stops? - That's right. It will play forever.
  • How does it work? - We use the Echo Nest analyzer to break the song into beats. We play the song beat by beat, but at every beat there's a chance that we will jump to a different part of song that happens to sound very similar to the current beat. For beat similarity we look at pitch, timbre, loudness, duration and the position of the beat within a bar. There's a nifty visualization that shows all the possible transitions that can occur at any beat.

You can also adjust the match sensitivity. Less sensitive means more branch points that are likely to sound less natural, and more sensitive means it'll sound better but branch less often.

Some tracks work better than others. Some work perfectly and just remix forever until you get sick of the song, while others have, say, remixed guitar solos or choruses while the verses are untouched. The more repetitive the song structure, the better it'll work. I find the settings usually take a bit of tuning to find the sweet spot.

Some of my favourites:
There's a search box to find tracks as most stuff has already been uploaded, and if it hasn't you can upload mp3s yourself. The track ID and settings get set in the page URL, so it's easy to share good tracks with their settings. So, PYF Infinite Jukebox tracks!

This site was pretty rad when I was studying and didn't want to be bothered with changing tracks. It's still fun to mess with!

I don't know any of those songs. I'll have to work my way through them.

I only know one Chromeo song, because it got used in some old game I bought off gog.com. Really catchy, and goes well with the Infinite Jukebox too

Is there hard transfer points? Because I upload the first song I could find easily on my HD, shamefully Somebody That I Used to Know.

The part about a tenth back from the beginning repeats forever.

Someone else torture themselves with this and see if they can get to the end of the song.

There are no guaranteed jumps. You can delete jumps you don't want by clicking on them and hitting del.

Holy poo poo, that's beautiful.

Wait, hang on. That's only done that because for some reason that track is the song played twice. So it perfectly matches the first time through with the second time through, each taking exactly half the playtime of the track.
