First off, I just want to clarify one thing. Throughout my posting career people have asked me if my user name is "Gross, Dude" or just referring to a dude who is gross. It's neither. It's because I've always been a huge advocate for using pergross instead of percent. The reason that pergross is better is that it has more prime factors. 100 only has four: 2,2,5,5. This means that the factors that can easily divide it are 2,4,10,20,25,50,100. And, these correspond to some common, nice looking percentages. 50%,25%,10%,5%,4%,2%,1%. I mean, that's a nice slew of percentages, but think about 33.33333%. That's awful, yuck, rounding. But thing about 144. It has way more prime factors. 2,2,2,2,3,3. Giving it following factors: 2,3,4,6,8,9,12,16,18,24,36,48,72,144! Wow that's a ton! We do lose out on our factors of 5, so bye bye to 20,10 and 4 percent. But, we have three as a factor! That means no infinitely repeating numbers when we do 1/6 or 1/3. What's even better is that we have two 3s! That means even 9 is fine by us! And even though we did lose 5, 5 in base ten doesn't lead to infinite repetition, so it's a small loss. Below is a percent to pergross chart to help you get started using this new and better system. I am excited to get the ball rolling on this amazing achievement in math, and you should all be honored that I shared it with BYOB first. (æ is the pergross sign) 100% -> 144æ 50% -> 72æ 33.333% -> 48æ 25% -> 36æ 20% -> 28.8æ 16.667% -> 24æ 12.5% -> 18æ 11.111% -> 16æ 10% -> 14.4æ 8.5% -> 12æ 6.25% -> 9æ 5.556% -> 8æ 5% -> 7.2æ 4.167% -> 6æ 2.778% -> 4æ 2.083% -> 3æ 2% -> 2.88æ 1.389% -> 2æ 1% -> 1.44æ |
