I feel like there's an unexplored political significance to the fact that a major historical blockbuster of recent years had to tell viewers that that 1858 was "“Two years before the Civil War.”

I mean, on the one hand it's remarkable that the producers and director didn't trust the audience to know this. On the other hand the Civil War actually began in 1861 and not 1860, so apparently this fear of the audiences' historical ignorance was entirely justified.

Basically this is Donald Trump's America and we're all just living in it.
