The greatest and perhaps only sin of the prequels is simply taking fantastic ideas and rendering them with a note of blandness.

No the greatest sin is setting up Anakin and Padme's love as the root cause of the fall of the Republic...then utterly failing to deliver on that romance. Anakin-Padme is meant to be the heart of the prequel trilogy, and since it fails, so does the whole trilogy.

I imagine JL will still make a dumptruck full of money. The studio may have wanted/expected several dumptrucks, but they'll still make as much or more as they did with Suicide Squad or BatsvSupes. Which will be enough for them to keep on trying, I expect.

i suppose its too much to hope that this is the beginning of the comic book movie crash

Yeah, don't get your hopes up on that score. "Comic book movie" has turned out to be a pretty inclusive category. Compare Guardians of the Galaxy (science fiction action/comedy), Captain America Winter Soldier (spy film), Ant-Man (heist film), Logan (mutant western), and Deadpool (R-rated violent comedy), all of which are "comic book movies" but none of them are tonally similar to each other or to mainline comic book movies like The Avengers. The ability of comic book characters to adapt into different genres by simply adding "...but with superheroes" makes the whole thing a lot less likely to crash out quickly or at once.

Particularly since the Justice Department's complaint about AT&T/Time-Warner seems to revolve around CNN, against whom Trump holds a grudge.

Hey, how far along is shooting for Avengers 4? Because if its early enough in the process, they could bring the X-Men in near the end of the film to help save the universe, the threat of Thanos and the Gauntlet being enough to bring them out of hiding at last.
