Rocks posted:what's Rubios strategy walking into this? be positive and ignore trump? yell at Cruz instead? Yell at trump even more than last debate? curl up into the fetal position and hope they ignore you?? All 3 candidates not named trump will be on the offensive against Trump. Kelly will probably be antagonistic as well. Kasich will take the high road, Rubio will get in back and forths, and Cruz will slime until Trump stabs him to death behind the stage. Generally: I'd expect Trump to get hit with absolutely everything they can. Rubio will probably take point because he's shown the ability to out think Trump on the stage. e: I expect every single question to candidates to be answered very quickly and then segue into an attack on Trump, for instance.

The real big question is how well Trump can counter "punch." He's in a strong position because he can [rightly] bring up that all of them are tremendous losers. With Cruz he has the Sessions endorsement, which is a huge cudgel to beat Ted with. His absolute best moment last debate was "Keep swinging, men" and the implied "I'm still going to beat you."

It's amazing that Foxnews did a coordinated hit on Trump, smacked rubio around a bit. And the only thing that will be remembered is that Ted Cruz ate something on his lip on live television and that Trump made a joke about his penis. God bless us.

Trump isn't really flopping more or less than normal, and he's actually seemingly better prepared on a lot of this. I'm calling it a wash tbh.

funny way to spell posted:This is just a Trump hit piece at this point. All the premade graphics and YouTube montages are transparent. The problem is that its a coordinated hitjob thats pretty transparent. Trump voters are already angry and view Fox as the enemy as well as the rest of the media. While I think it could hurt him and maybe force a brokered convention or something, this has a decent chance of just loving backfiring.

Vermain posted:Yeah, no kidding. A huge portion of his campaign has been about being anti-establishment, and now the establishment is actually trying to character assassinate him in the most painfully obvious way possible, and talking about subverting the democratic process just to ensure he isn't chosen as the candidate for Presidency. This isn't a good look for the Republican Party, to say the least of things. It's tough to know. Trump actually collapsing right now and handing the thing to Cruz might even be MORE of a disaster for the gop.

Donald Trump literally saved himself and he doesn't even know it. No one is going to be able to resist talking about this at , uh, "great length" and its going to save most of the talk about him getting creamed by Megyn Kelly.

Mitt Romney posted:The last 75% of this debate is pretty bad for Trump, will it matter? Does it matter though? He's got 4 states where, even though they're closed and a couple caucuses, theoretically favor him pretty seriously. Even he limps through them and takes 3 out of the 4, all of this drops right back out of the news cycle.

Also, the multitude of responses itt about Trump [who hasn't looked good at all this debate, but neither has anyone else] should tell anyone about the predictive power of debate performances. The main soundbite tomorrow is going to be Donald Trump bragging about his penis and y'all know it.

Vermain posted:Like, even in the absolute best-case scenario where Trump's numbers are somehow hurt seriously enough for him to lose every state after this, then the Republican Party is going to get Ted Cruz, Presidential Candidate Supreme, unless they also do a hit on him. They're actually driving themselves into a corner where there's no possibility of them even approaching winning the presidency. If trump loses and Cruz, Rubio, and Kasich fight for scraps, you get a contested convention and a fractured party. The GOP is going full scorched earth and they know it.

I think Trump and his campaign aren't stupid everyone. Donald Trump is a lot of things, but he's murdered career politicians pretty effortlessly and this campaign will be studied for basically ever. He probably knew this was coming and plowed forward anyway. I feel like what happened here is a repeat of most debates. Trump's floor stays solid, and the debate peels off a layer or two of the weak support until he starts winning again. Unfortunately for everyone else, if his 30-35% floor holds in the next 4 states, he's going to sweep all 4 of them and then the narrative is right back in his camp. And now they're all on record that they're going to support him.
