Yeah if you don't mind a game in alpha, PG is amazing. My primary character is literally a giant spider that bakes a lot of muffins and banana bread. The Steam release was delayed so Citan could get some more stuff in place, and I'm not sure how in-depth any potential "free trial" will be (if there even is one) once it finally transitions to B2P. So if you want to try it free now's the time. Housing in at least two game towns (including the exclusive-ish area for giant animal characters) has been confirmed as an eventual thing too, if either of you like that in your casual MMO fun.
