There is an annoying but cute little owl that sits on the wall just outside my window. He was so loud last night I didn't get to sleep for ages (they make this really high pitched screech sound). I wish I could get a photo.

A bit meta, but what is it about puppies/kittens that taps into our brain chemistry? I know the obvious answer is it must be similar to human children or at least be in the same area of the brain releasing chemicals. But why don't we just watch videos of human kids and get the same response? I'm a not a parent and I will happily entertain my parent friends (obviously) and I think kids can be cute but I would never type "baby videos" into youtube in the same way I do with dogs and cats. Why is that?

Getting high on oxytocin. (thanks for the video) I'm still puzzled at why other peoples kids don't have the effect though.

RFC2324 posted:Because we are wired to see other peoples babies as a potential threat to our own. Other peoples babies consume resources that would benefit our own, and therefor are not to be protected like our own. We aren't wired to actively kill them simple because you don't kill off the herd. gently caress. I suppose that makes sense.

ultrafilter posted:From the badass pictures thread, but I think it fits in here: I remember watching a bbc documentary about this bloke raising a panther cub. He had to have at home for the first few weeks to make sure he was bottle fed and would survive. With in some thing like 4-8 weeks the cub was so strong it was unreal. They followed it's progress almost daily and it got to the point where his teenage daughter couldn't really play with it any more because it was so strong. I can absolutely believe a fully grown adult is immensely, it's terrifying thinking what they could so you when you factor in claws/teeth etc.
