LibertyCat posted:Putting people places where they otherwise wouldn't qualify (due to their lack of merit) only reinforces negative stereotypes. Old boys networks seek to perpetuate themselves. You can't just sit back and hope they'll do the right thing, they need to be actively broken up. The point of quotas isn't to put in unqualified women over qualified men, it's to make sure that qualified women don't get excluded just because they're women.

I love the irony in someone arguing that people just need to negotiate better while simultaneously following an ideology built on crushing the ability of workers to negotiate.

Reasons I have been disallowed for giving blood include getting bitten by insects while in the garden, having blisters from running and having a small cut from something.

open24hours posted:Being made to live with malfunctioning lungs or kidneys or going longer than you should between blood transfusions or whatever is probably pretty harmful to a child's development too. Obviously donating blood or organs is more invasive than most vaccinations (although if the subject is dead then this doesn't really matter), but that seems like a pretty arbitrary distinction. Donating blood (or an organ) offers no medical benefits to the donor. Getting a vaccination (generally) benefits the recipient. That's a huge difference, even before you ignore things like herd immunity.

LibertyCat posted:There's education and there's education. If you knowingly spend the (mostly) Government's money doing a poorly paid degree, well what did you think would happen? Worse, imagine spending a few years of your life on a degree but never actually doing the research to see what it will likely pay. I know people who did exactly this and were surprised when no-one offered them six figures at the end of it. Why are you quoting US data?
