It's like the RSPCA's stance on halal slaughter. It's not the most humane option we can do, but it's the only real workable solution to a real issue we have right now. Or in their words:

In these cases, the risks to welfare from allowing feather pecking and cannibalism to continue are greater than those associated with the beak trimming procedure.

They can demand sovereignty, insist that they never signed a treaty, and that the Australia Government has no claim - but if you can't pass your own laws , collect your own taxes and boot out everyone who isn't a "citizen" you're obviously not a Sovereign Nation. Recognizing the "Continuing Sovereignty of First Nations" (as NIRS announces each day) is ignoring reality. Actual sovereignty is a pipe dream.

Let's be blunt; when the Europeans arrived, they were not greeted by a collection of civilized nations. Australia was inhabited by illiterate stone-age tribes that could never have defended their homeland from any settlement by other groups. I wish it hadn't involved bloodshed but I don't see any feasible way the original inhabitants could have kept ownership of the continent into the 1900s.

I was listening to a "please give blood" plea on the radio this morning, and a thought occurred to me - why not (as long as it is medically ok) make Centrelink conditional on being a blood donor?

You could set up donation centers inside Centrelink offices and make it part of the regular appointment. If you're unemployed you're not exactly short of time like most workers. The Red Cross would save money on advertisements and mobile vans. It could save a heap of lives with no real downside.

Have you given blood? If you have, surely you know how easy it would be to get out of it right, just say you had sex with a bisexual guy once.

quote:

The Northern Territory health minister has suggested the furore around Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu’s medical treatment is a publicity stunt for forthcoming albums.

The comments come amid an increasingly hostile public dispute between the Royal Darwin hospital and the singer’s manager and specialist doctor, with the latter releasing medical records in order to back up their claims of racial profiling.

The Yolngu singer was admitted to emergency at the Royal Darwin hospital on Easter Sunday with internal bleeding complications relating to liver disease. It was the second time in less than a month Gurrumul had been admitted for the bleeding but this time his manager and specialist doctor alleged hospital staff left him without the required treatment for hours longer than hospital protocols.

NSW finest:

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-04-10/greens-mp-jenny-leong-demands-action-after-online-posts/7313898

quote:

Alleged racist and sexist comments from police about a NSW Greens MP have been branded "disgusting and completely unacceptable" by the politician targeted.

New South Wales Greens MP Jenny Leong has demanded a police watchdog investigate allegations that officers posted the remarks about her on social media.

Ms Leong, who is the member for Newtown, said the offensive posts were made after she introduced a bill to State Parliament last month which aimed to end the use of drug detection dogs in public places without a warrant.

Ms Leong has also referred the matter to the Police Integrity Commission and said those responsible needed to be held accountable.

In a letter to the police commissioner, Ms Leong's office detailed the criticism directed at Ms Leong after she posted a photo on Facebook of police with drug detection dogs.

"A person we suspect to be a police officer going by the pseudonym 'Jack Zane' commented 'Wow Jenny. It was clearly a mistake when your father spotted your mother across a crowded [swamp] and dragged her back to his hut to make you'," the letter read.

The letter stated the person behind the Jack Zane account then changed the profile picture to one of Ms Leong before posting further offensive material including: "Her daddy was a swamp monkey."

Ms Leong said another profile that she believed was operated by a police officer posted further offensive comments while several other officers liked and commented on the posts.

"The allegation that it is actually members of the NSW police that are engaging and contributing to attacks makes it even more concerning," she told the ABC.

"This kind of harassment is also a serious threat to the health of our democracy and can prevent robust, healthy debate in our communities."
