Nakajima Atsushi was kicked out of his orphanage, and now he has no place to go and no food. While he is standing by a river, on the brink of starvation, he rescues a man whimsically attempting suicide. That man is Dazai Osamu, and he and his partner Kunikida are members of a very special detective agency. They have supernatural powers and deal with cases that are too dangerous for the police or the military. They're tracking down a tiger that has appeared in the area recently, around the time Atsushi came to the area. The tiger seems to have a connection to Atsushi, and by the time the case is solved, it is clear that Atsushi's future will involve much more of Dazai and the rest of the detectives!

Based on a novel and manga series, this show features characters based very loosely on literary figures -- primarily Japanese, but some later characters are based on Western authors as well. Each character has an "ability" that gives them a special power and the basis for the name and characteristics of their ability comes from that author's work. Bungo Stray Dogs will have two 12-episode seasons with the second season airing this fall.

Characters listed are the ones on the cast list so far; I swiped the names and abilities from this thread on Batoto (click at your own risk re: spoilers) so they may not exactly match the Crunchyroll subs.
I'd like to let a few more characters get introduced then I'll put together (i.e. steal from somewhere) some details on who everyone is based on and what their ability is referring to.

In the meantime, I stole some gifs from tumblr:

So why are they named after famous authors? is there a point to that or is it just to generate interest without any payoff?

They're all loosely (very, very loosely) based on various authors -- as in mostly just names and a few characteristics -- and the abilities are based on their works. That's about all there is to it. I'm not really sure what kind of point you'd be looking for?

:neckbeard: Port Mafia!

I kinda wish they hadn't gone the light show route with abilities because Dazai jumping between them and everything just stops is more effective in the manga. I also prefer the way Tanizaki's ability is more subtle in the manga although the Matrix-ish thing they went with for the anime is kinda cool.

Ultra-violence is the tone of the source material although it's not super gorey (there's blood and people getting pretty messed up but no guts and giblets I mean). The anime has lightened things up considerably thus far so I hope those watching don't get too much tone whiplash because it's pretty much gonna be fights from here out now that the villains and plot have kicked in.

As far as I can tell he hasn't been turned into a character in any of the source material so no. Not really sure what their criteria is for picking people, he might be too controversial? The author/their estate has to consent as well so there may be a bunch of people they wanted to use for characters and couldn't get permission.

Since he's not listed in the OP, the old guy with the Black Lizard group is Ryurou Hirotsu and his ability is "Falling Camellia" which causes things he touches to fly back with immense force. The author he's based on created the tragic novel genre in Japanese literature :eng101:

And yeah, Atsushi is pretty much done running away now and is ready to actually start working.
Next episode should be pretty fun :3:

Alright y'all I'm doing some half-assed internet research because I know jack poo poo about Japanese literature but can at least provide some wikipedia links. I'm going to do this in pieces because :effort: and so that I don't get too far ahead of who and what the show has introduced.

Atsushi Nakajima is based on Atsushi Nakajima (1909 - 1942) and his ability "Beast Beneath the Moonlight," which gives him a badass weretiger form and super regeneration, is a reference to The Moon over the Mountain, an anthology of tales based on Chinese legends and more specifically the story "The Tiger Man" about a bureaucrat who turns into a tiger.

Osamu Dazai, based on Osamu Dazai (1909 - 1948), has the ability "No Longer Human" which nullifies others' abilities. The ability is a reference to the 1948 novel by the same name which tells the story of "a troubled man incapable of revealing his true self to others, and who is instead forced to uphold a facade of hollow jocularity." Dazai aattempted suicide multiple times through his life and died shortly before his 39th birthday in a double suicide with his lover.

Doppo Kunikida is based on poet and novelist Doppo Kunikida (1871 - 1908) and his ability is "Doppo Poetry" which causes the objects written in his notebook to appear in real life. The ability's name is a reference to a collection of poems, Doppo Gin. Kunikida taught English, math, and history and is considered one of the inventors of Japanese naturalism.

Junichirou Tanizaki is based on Jun'ichiro Tanizaki (1886 - 1965) and has the ability "Light Snow" which creates snowfall in the immediate area and allows him to project illusions. The ability is a reference to Tanizaki's novel Sasameyuki which was published in English as The Makioka Sisters because they gave up on trying to accurately translate the meaning of the title, which means roughly "lightly falling snow" or "a light snowfall" but also suggests cherry blossom petals falling in spring. His sister Naomi is a reference to another novel by Tanizaki, Chijin no Ai (A Fool's Love) which was published in English as Naomi and is about a guy who grooms a teenage girl to be his perfect Western wife until she turns the tables and starts dominating him. Tanizaki worked as a script writer for silent films, so the character's ability involving the projection of illusions is probably also a nod to that.

Dang I was really hoping there would have been a reaction or two to episode 5, I've been trying really hard not to spoil anything about Ranpo and now I'm not sure whether or not everyone has seen it and doesn't give a poo poo or just not watched it yet.

Episode 6 is an adaption of some material from one of the prequel light novels. I was really confused for a sec because all the others have been pretty straight-up 1 ep/1 chapter adaptions (well ep. 4 mashed together 2 chapters but it was one arc) and was really hoping they hadn't decided to pad things with original content, but it looks like they're going to pull from the novels to stretch the pacing out a bit. I'm only 6 minutes into the episode but it was driving me crazy not knowing where this was adapated from so I had to pause and look it up haha.

Anyway adapting the novels works for me -- better than pulling a BBB and getting anime-only content and I'd rather watch this than read a ln fan translation although that one I linked is decently readable.

My initial expectation was that the first season would handle the Detective Agency v Port Mafia and then introduce the foreign element for the second season, and when things were moving along so speedily early on that seemed reasonable but now I think you're right and it's not going to get that far. Steinbeck's ability is pretty gnarly, he used the "plant on a host" bit in the most recently translated chapter and I was like :stonk:

The ending to that wasn't unexpected although I wasn't sure how the hacker kid was going to turn out. I'm glad they decided to merge the novel stuff in, that gave Kunikida some much-needed development that he doesn't really get in the manga. That mid-air switch, too :allears:

Nobuko Sasaki was Doppo Kunikida's first wife and well...it didn't really work out for them either :v:

wikipedia posted:

Against her parent's wishes (Nobuko's mother encouraged her to commit suicide rather than marry Doppo), the couple was married in November 1895. Kunikida's ensuing financial difficulties caused the pregnant Nobuko to divorce him after only five months. The failed marriage had a traumatic effect on Doppo, and his depression and mental anguish over the separation can be seen in Azamukazaru no Ki, published from 1908–1909.

I guess they dealt with having to incorporate Atsushi as best they could but man you could really tell he wasn't part of the original material. Next ep is back to the manga!

So was it actually confirmed anywhere if Kunikida was the Azure King or was his model (with the hair and all) used to portray the person in flashbacks for no such reason? Because I was so sure almost to the end that they'd do a dumb "Kunikida was the Azure King before he joined the office, he's making up for past mistakes" reveal, but then again...he's not really old enough to be the hacker boy's dad...and the crazy lady didn't show any signs of recognition...and now instead of being happy about having my prediction diverted I feel like Kunikida was dragged into the whole drama for no real reason. :argh: "HAVING IDEALS GETS PEOPLE KILLED" seems like a dumb morale for the story.

No it was pretty much the ideals thing, dumb as it was. The similarities were there to draw parallels between Kunikida and the Azure King imo -- a "this is you if you stay on this path" kind of thing. It's not really that having ideals in general is such a bad thing but that Kunikida is super rigid and uptight and is basically setting himself up for failure by having such high standards for every aspect of his life to follow.

Very much enjoyed Fukuzawa in the latest episode, his nickname may be Silver Wolf but he's a silver fox :swoon: Also lol @ Ranpo's motivation for helping. They apparently have a lot of history - Fukuzawa founded the Armed Detective Agency to give Ranpo a safe place to belong.

Dazai and Chuya's backstory is interesting, but the manga has only just now gotten into any of it so it probably won't get explained in the show: As stated, they were a team -- Chuya's ability at max level is super strong but rages out of control and Dazai is the only one who can pull him out of it before it kills him. It's easy to see why they get shipped together a lot -- they have one of those relationships where they snipe at each other constantly but have an underlying sense of trust, since Chuya has to depend on Dazai not to let him die.

I hope they don't condense the fight too much in the next episode! They got to it a little bit earlier than I expected because ep 8 was another 2-chapter arc mashed into one episode and ep 9 also covered a couple of chapters; I'd kinda figured it would be the last arc of the season because there's some lighter content afterwards, but I could see maybe the big fight covering eps 10/11 and 12 being more of an epilogue. They can probably do it all in one without crunching too much though, so I wonder if they end up doing that if the next 2 chapters would get their own episode each or get combined into one leaving 12 for the first clash with The Guild.

lol you just know that everything Dazai does to gently caress with Kunikida now, he used to do to Chuya

That episode felt a tiny bit rushed to me but I glanced back through those chapters and this was practically a panel by panel adaption so I guess it just felt more drawn out when I read it. I like that they put both chapter titles into the preview for the next episode, looks like it's going to cover quite a bit of ground.

The one major change was only introducing one Guild member vs three of them but I'm sure that saved having to cast more voice actors just for one tiny scene.

I don't think any of the characters are supposed to actually be the writers they're named for. I'm not entirely sure what you mean by how militaristic Japan seems though? I don't recall seeing any actual military, just police. There's also a government branch that deals with ability users that was briefly mentioned but don't remember if they named it. TBH I don't think the show or the manga either one has done a huge amount of world-building beyond establishing the various groups that are either composed of ability users or have to deal with them in some way, but I like how the setting is limited to one city even though at least one of the big players operates on an international scale.

I'm not sure how much this has come through just from the show but there seems to be a fairly precarious balance between those groups in Yokohama (prior to the guild showing up). There's an organized crime element running around doing pretty much whatever they want, but they have enough respect for the law that they're concerned about their secrets being outed to the authorities. The police/government have their hands so full that they have to contract out jobs to the Armed Detectives, who seem to have free reign to operate however they want. There's kind of a frontier/wild west feeling to the whole thing to me.

I can't post anything from the latest chapters since it would be huge spoilers but I really hope the second season gets to all of this. Ch 36 is (very general plot-related spoiler) the end of the fight with the Guild/Fitzgerald but there's quite a bit between where S1 left off and that point. It's not totally undoable, Ch 15/16 was where Season 1 left off and they did burn an episode on novel content so they could probably cover most everything without the pacing suffering too much. The Guild guys are pretty fun though and I'd hate for the anime not to do justice to all of them.

So many reveals in the last 2-3 chapters though, I was glad to find out all that stuff but thought also maybe some of that could have come out sooner instead of the reader being in the dark so much. It does kinda give you some tone whiplash, the silliness got played up for the anime I think but it settles in as the season goes on imo. I think overall the concept is silly enough in itself that if it went totally serious and grim it would just end up ridiculously up its own rear end, so I'm glad it never takes itself too seriously even when the bad poo poo is going down.
